If there was a community project in Oxford County over the past decade, there is a good chance Amy Danen was there to lend a hand. For her leadership roles with 4-H Ontario and the Oxford County Junior Farmers, Danen is a 2022-23 recipient of the CCAA Torchbearer Scholarship, presented by Hudl. Danen, of Tavistock, Ontario, is enrolled in Niagara College’s Carpentry and Renovation Techniques Program in Welland, ON. She is a first-year curler with the Niagara Knights Varsity Program. The peak contribution that Danen initiated in her community is an annual Drive-Thru Ham Supper. As the fundraising Coordinator with the Oxford County Junior Farmers, she organized the project, under pandemic restrictions, to bring together the community and support a local cause. The proceeds from the 2020, ‘21, and ‘22 suppers have supported six area food banks with more than $12,000 in donations. “Amy is a natural leader, and her positive attitude resonates with teammates, opponents and everyone she meets,” said Bryant Karner, Head Coach of the Niagara Knights Curling team. “Her hard work and determination are second to none and are demonstrated on the ice, in the classroom and in her community.” Amy has contributed to 4-H Ontario initiatives for more than 10 years and has completed more than 31 projects to date. 4-H Ontario’s vision is to share the value of a clear Head, loyal Heart, serving Hands and better Health with youth, volunteers and communities. “Amy has achieved many things by applying the 4-H Motto, “Learn to do by Doing”, in her everyday life,” said Shonna Ward, Hickson 4-H Club Leader. “Amy is a friendly, outgoing person who is willing to try new things, is eager to learn and always willing to help.” Danen has been recognized for contributions with 4-H Project Completion Seals (6, 12, 18, 24 and 30), the Gay Lea Co-operative Limited Award of Achievement, the Janet Wilson Memorial Outstanding Female Member Award and service recognition from the Princess Elizabeth Women’s Institute. She has volunteered on projects including meal fundraisers, fair organization, youth events, community cleanups, 4-H event reporter and photographer, youth mentor and committee representative. “Volunteering is something that has been a huge part of my life and I’m glad to be a part of it in so many different ways,” stated Danen. “It's a great honour to receive this award for doing something that I love.” Danen’s academic and career goals are also related to improving her community. Her plan is to use the carpentry and renovation skills she is developing at Niagara College to eventually start a business that restores historic buildings in her hometown.
