CCAA Women's Soccer: Day 1 Recap

MATCH 1: Vanier Cheetahs 7, Holland Hurricanes 0

The top-ranked Vanier Cheetahs defeated the Holland hurricanes with a dominating 7-0 victory in the opening match of the 2021 CCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship.

The Cheetahs opened the game up in the 14th minute with a free-kick from Laurie-Anne Moise that curled into the box of the Hurricanes, connecting with rookie Mallie Allard who’s header beat the keeper for the opening tally.

In the 23rd minute Vanier doubled its lead when senior Shaylynn Bentley took a free-kick just outside the box which rebounded off of Holland goalie Brianna Spencer right to Sofia Beersworth, for her first of the tournament.

In the 30th minute Asma Merzougui blasted a stinger from outside the 18-yard box putting it past Spencer making it 3-0 for Vanier. Minutes later Bentley gave Vanier their fourth of the match crossing the goalie and just tapping it past the line.

Four minutes into the second half, the Cheetahs scored two goals within one minute, one being an own goal from the Hurricanes defender Louisa McMurrer and the second coming from rookie Kristina Syragakis tapping in a cross with ease from Bentley. 

Syragakis put another past Holland in the 72nd minute with an assist by Claudia Lapenna. 

The 4imprint Players of the Match were Shaylynn Bently from Vanier and Brianna Spencer from Holland.

MATCH 2: Capilano Blues 7, Fanshawe Falcons 1

The PACWEST champions Capilano defeated the OCAA champions Fanshawe, 7-1.

Capilano took an early lead in the eighth minute with Mya Fraser heading a cross from a corner kick and bouncing it into the back of the net.

Moments later, Blues’ senior Catrina Olstrom intercepts a bad ball from the Fanshawe’s defence and cuts by two defenders to the swing it past Fanshawe keeper Breanna Carreiro, giving Capilano a 2-0 lead. 

In the 27th minute, senior Claire Ye sends a high ball across the Fanshawe box and connects with rookie Katrina Campbell who heads it into the net, 3-0 Capilano. A minute later, rookie Taylor Colby beats Carreiro to the ball and slices it past her giving Capilano a strong 4-0 lead. 

In the last two minutes of the of the first half, Capilano added on three more goals from Campbell, Olstrom and Colby, making it 7-0 at the half. 

Kayla McQueen, the CCAA All-Canadian senior from Fanshawe, got the Falcons on the board in the 60th minute.

The 4imprint Players of the Match were Juliana Popovich Fanshawe Falcons and Catrina Olstrom of the Capilano Blues.

MATCH 3: Humber Hawks 2, SAIT Trojans 0

The host team Humber Hawks pulled off the first upset of the tournament, blanking the ACAC champion SAIT Trojans, 3-0.

Humber dominated possession to begin the match, getting on the board in 19th minute when a long free-kick delivered by Hayley Lewis rang off of the crossbar and deflected to the OCAA rookie of the year Kaitlynn Russell, who cleaned up the rebound for Humber.

With added time in the first half, senior Rebecca Spratt took through ball from Giulia Zanardi inside the penalty area and beat the SAIT keeper, extending Humber’s lead into the break, 2-0.

The Trojans best chance to get on the scoresheet came late in the second-half, when a free kick bounced around inside the penalty area, nearly crossing the line off of a deflection. Spratt was able to nudge it out before keeper Vanessa Fiore jumped on the loose ball.

Rookie Cara Serapiglia extended Humber’s lead to three with a beautiful individual effort, cutting past SAIT’s keeper, Erin Mergen, to seal the match in the 81st minute. 

The 4imprint Players of the Match were Giulia Zanardi for the Hawks and Kenzie Georgsen for the Trojans. 

MATCH 4: Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy 3, Rouges de l’Universite de Saint-Boniface 0

RSEQ silver medallist Sainte-Foy blanked Saint-Boniface 3-0 in the final quarter-final match of the night.  

In the 18th minute, Les Rouges defender Tara Boulanger tackled Ste-Foy’s forward Aurelie Munger in the box giving up a penalty kick. Laurie Champagne stepped up to the mark and converted the penalty, easing the ball into the bottom left corner and beating Les Rouges keeper Daneige Edey. 

In the 76th minute a miscommunication between Les Rouges defenders led to an own goal, increasing Ste-Foy’s lead to two.

With time running out, is awarded a free kick in the 83rd minute and Beatrice Larochelle floats the ball right to Edey who deflects it away, only for Magaly Lafond to slam it into the net making, sealing the victory for Ste-Foy, 3-0. 

The 4imprint Players of the Match were Angélique Dumas from the Dynamiques and Daneige Edeyfor of Les Rouges.
