Abdu named CCAA Women’s Soccer Player of the Year

Latifah Abdu of the Vanier Cheetahs is the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Soccer Player of the Year.

Abdu was honoured at the 2021 CCAA Women's Soccer National Championship, hosted by Humber College in Woodbridge, ON.

"Latifah has the ability to create offence and she makes everyone around her better," said Marlene Ford, CCAA Women's Soccer Convenor. "She is a passionate and hard-working student-athlete and will be a pleasure to watch this week at CCAA Nationals."

Abdu led the Cheetahs – playing in their first season in Division 1 play – to a 9-0-1 record and first-place finish in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ). The second-year striker scored 10 goals in only seven games.

In 2019, Abdu led the Cheetahs to a Division 2 title in the RSEQ. In two seasons with Vanier, she has yet to lose a game.

The RSEQ Player of the Year also suited up this season for Mont-Royal Outremont in the Première Ligue de soccer du Québec, where she scored eight goals in nine games. She was named Player of the Year.

Abdu is a passionate and hard-working student-athlete who continues to strive academically. She also volunteers her time at Vanier College.

"Latifah is a unique student-athlete that has a rare ability to create, and finish plays for her teammates," said Mai Nguyen, Student Life Advisor-Athletics at Vanier College. "She is a competitor that makes everyone around her better, and if you ever have the opportunity to see her play, you will be amazed of how talented this young lady is."

Other nominees for the CCAA Women's Soccer Player of the Year award were Claire Ye of the Capilano Blues (Pacific Western Athletic Association), Breanna Callander of the Concordia Thunder (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference), Sydney Sica of the Niagara Knights (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association), and Annika Monroe of the Mount Saint Vincent University Mystics (Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association).
