CCAA Men's Volleyball: Day Three Recap

Match 9: Camosun Chargers 3, STU Tommies 1

The host Camosun Chargers and Atlantic Colleges Athletic Association champions, the Saint Thomas University Tommies faced off in the seventh/eighth placement match to open the games on Saturday.

Camosun took an early lead in the opening set and secured victory 25-20. Brenton Romanchuk put up seven kills and two blocks for the Tommies in the opening set, while Liam Conlin had four aces for the Chargers.

In the second set, Chargers were blasting on the offensive, recording 13 kills, while the Tommies responding defensively picking up 10 digs. Camosun won the close set 25-22.

The Tommies answered back in the third picking up nine kills, 10 digs and eight blocks to win the set 25-22. Camosun recorded 11 kills. In front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the Chargers brought the game home in the fourth with a 25-22 win over the maritime squad

Liam Conlin was named Player of the Match for the Chargers and Mason Brewster received the accolades for the Tommies. Camosun finished the tournament in seventh place, while STU picked up eighth spot.


Match 10: VIU Mariners 3, Providence Pilots 0

In the first bronze semi-final, the VIU Mariners faced off against the hosts of next year’s tournament, the Providence Pilots. The Mariners showed their strength from the start of the match, and the Pilots were ready for it.

In a closely contested match, the Mariners pulled out a narrow 25-23 first set victory, and were even more dominant in the second, winning by six (25-19). The Pilots kept the Mariners on their toes in the third set, and just when you thought the set was close to over, the Pilots matched the Mariners and kept pushing. VIU finally completed the sweep by a score of 30-28.

With four kills, a block, an ace and outstanding support for his team, Sebastian Verdaguer earned Player of the Match for the Pilots, while Jake Stobbe was named Player of the Match for the Mariners with eight kills, four digs, and three blocks. The Mariners advance to the bronze medal match on Sunday.


Match 11: Humber Hawks 3, Fanshawe Falcons 2

In a rematch of the OCAA championship match, the Fanshawe Falcons battled the Humber Hawks in the other bronze semi-final.

Marcus Morgan started off strong for the Hawks, putting down five kills in the opening set, while Tanner Paterson recorded three for the Falcons. The Falcons prevailed in the opening set 25-23. The Ontario champion and wildcard teams showed again why their battles are so tight and highly competitive as the Hawks took the second 27-25. Zack Admans and Elliott Leslie both added a pair of kills for Fanshawe, and Teyven Blackmore put up four for Humber.

It wasn’t all offensive on the court though, Kyle Gray-Phillips added three digs in the third set, for a total of 11, and Matthew Battad dug up four more, for nine on the match. The Falcons regained control of the game, winning the match 25-21, and taking a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set.

History repeats itself as the Hawks tie the game at 2-2 with a 25-20 win, forcing another five-set match-up, this time the winner plays another day. Zack Admans added three kills in the set for Fanshawe and Maximum Crowder matched him for Humber.

While both teams were hungry for the chance to play for bronze, the Hawks were hungrier and clinched their spot to play for bronze with a 15-10. Humber will play VIU at 2pm on Sunday.
