Joao Cunha of the Keyano Huskies is the 2024 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year. Cunha was honoured at the 2024 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship, hosted by Camosun College in Victoria, BC. As the court captain throughout the season, Cunha showcased unparalleled confidence, elevating the performance of every teammate and solidifying his role as the heart and soul of the team. Cunha’s remarkable CCAA career spanning three seasons has been characterized by consistency and excellence, with 703 kills, 274 digs, 81 aces, 50 blocks, 37 assists, and an impressive 834 points. Matthew Schnarr CCAA men's volleyball convenor said, “Joao Cunha of the Keyano Huskies is the penultimate leader and captain in CCAA Men’s Volleyball. On the court, Joao’s ability to control the game in multiple areas is something to behold. Cunha’s stats certainly speak for itself as he is top 3 scorer in both kills and points per set in the ACAC but his volleyball IQ and ball control are what set him apart. These two skills were instrumental in the Huskies performance to help lead his team to the ACAC North Division crown. What truly separates Joao as the CCAA player of they year are his leadership qualities and contributions to the local community. Joao’s leadership as team captain has been integral in the development and elevation of his teammates play throughout the season. Joao suffered a late season injury that unfortunately took him off the court but that didn’t stop him from leading from the sideline. Not only did Joao impact his program but he left an imprint on the local community as well. With all these qualities, we are pleased to honor Joao Cunha as the 2023/24 CCAA Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year”. Off the court, Joao exemplifies the Huskies’ commitment to community outreach, dedicating 78 hours to various events, including McTavish Mental Health Week, Keyano Huskies Golf Tournament, and the Sparks Volleyball Program, where he serves as a coach. His engagement in community initiatives reflects his dedication to athletic excellence and making a positive impact beyond the volleyball court. “He’s a phenomenal athlete. He’s something super special that we’ve been lucky enough to have him as part our program. Every time he’s out there, he has an opportunity to dominate the game in all aspects. Even at his height, how skilled he is at passing the ball, his offence is fantastic. He’s a good server, great blocker, and a fantastic leader. He’s been our on-court captain this year and done amazing things for us. I’m really proud of what he was able to accomplish this year,” said Jonathan Lambert, Director, Athletics & Recreation at Keyano College.
