CCAA Men's Volleyball: Day Two Recap

Match 5: Fanshawe Falcons 3, STU Tommies 2

In the opening match of day two, the first bronze quarter-final featured the Fanshawe Falcons and the STU Tommies.

The Tommies took the first set in a close battle 25-23, but were out-played in the next two sets, dropping the pair 25-15 and 25-19. The team didn’t give up as they pulled out another close victory 25-22, to tie the game and force a fifth and final set. In the end, Fanshawe prevailed 15-13 to advance to the bronze semi-final. The Tommies will play for seventh/eighth.

From the Falcons, middle blocker Jayden Crowther was named 4Imprint Player of the Game with nine kills, four blocks, and seven block assists. Raphael Fiset, setter out of Calgary, Alberta, put up four kills and added 11 digs to earn Player of the Game for the Tommies.


Match 6: Providence Pilots 3, Camosun Chargers 1

The other bronze quarter-final saw the Providence Pilots take on the host Camosun Chargers.

The resilient Chargers, down eight in the opening set, battled back to bring the game within one, earning seven unanswered points. With a couple strong kills, the Pilots secured a 25-21 win. The second set was a classic volleyball battle, remaining tight all game. With 14 kills in the set, the Chargers earned a 26-24 win. The Chargers started off slow in the third, but fought their way back into the set. Down nine, they went on an eight-point run, which included three straight aces, but fell short, 27-25. The roar of the home crowd was not enough for the Chargers as they dropped the fourth set 25-19.

Providence advances to the bronze semi-final, while Camosun will play STU in the seventh/eighth place game on Saturday at 2:00pm.


Match 7: Titans de Limoilou 3, VIU Mariners 1

In the first semi-final match-up of the evening, the PACWEST Champs, VIU Mariners, took on the RSEQ winners, Titans de Limoilou.

The energy in the gym was electric even before the first ball was served, with the majority in favour of the Mariners, but a solid following for the Titans. In a fairly even opening set, the Mariners strong-armed the competition, primarily led by Lucas Torres who tallied six kills. VIU took the opening set 25-19. The Titans answered back in the second set, putting up 13 kills and owning the set, also finishing 25-19. They never looked back as they took the next two sets, 25-20 and 26-24 to punch their ticket to the championship game.

With 20 kills and five digs, Thomas Boccardi was named Titans de Limoilou Player of the Game. Daniel Mascarenhas was the Mariners Player of the Game.

The Titans will play in the gold medal match at 5:00pm on Sunday, while the Mariners will face the Providence Pilots in a bronze semi-final tomorrow at 4:30pm.


Match 8: Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Ooks 3, Humber Hawks 2

The other semi-final tonight, the NAIT Ooks are heading to the championship game for the first time in their team’s history. The Ooks stunned last year’s silver medalists in the first two sets as they dominated early, winning 25-16 and 25-16. The Hawks weren’t going down easy and changed the momentum in the third. The clawed their way to victory 25-20, putting a damper on the Ooks that carried over into the next set. Humber didn’t back down to NAIT and took the fourth set 25-19. In a back and forth fifth set nail biter, the Ooks were able to secure the final two points for victory and advance to the gold medal game with a 16-14 win.

Josh Watson recorded 13 kills and five service aces which earned him Player of the Game for the Ooks. With 16 kills, the Hawks Player of the Game was Marcus Morgan.

The Ooks will play for gold against the Titans on Sunday at 5pm, while the Hawks will play in a bronze semi-final against the Falcons on Saturday at 7pm.
