CCAA Men's Volleyball: Quarter-finals Recap

Match 1: Vancouver Island University Mariners 3, St. Thomas Tommies 0

The opening match of the championship saw the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) champions, VIU Mariners, take on the winners of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) STU Tommies. The Tommies kept pace with the dominate Mariners in front of a boisterous crowd and packed house at the Pacific Institute for Sport Education (PISE). VIU came from behind in the first to win 25-23, and followed that up with 25-19 second set victory. The third set was another close one between the two teams, but VIU pulled off the three-set sweep, 25-21.
Brenton Romanchuk was named the Tommies 4Imprint Player of the Match notching 9 kills and 7 digs, while Lucas Torres was 4Imprint Player of the Match for the Mariners with 15 kills.

Match 2: Titans de Limoilou 3, Fanshawe Falcons 1

In the second championship quarter-final, the RSEQ champs, Titans de Limoilou, faced off against the Ontario Collegiate Athletic Association (OCAA) wildcard, Fanshawe Falcons. The Titans stunned the Falcons right from the start in a back-and-forth opening set, claiming the opening match 25-23. The Falcons answered back with a three-point victory of the second set 25-22. Limoilou stepped on the pedal the next two matches, winning both (25-15, 25-21)
The Titans will face the Mariners in the first semi-final at 5:30pm on Friday, while the Falcons will play in the bronze quarter-final versus the Tommies on Friday at 12:00pm.
Tanner Paterson was named 4Imprint Player of the Match for Fanshawe with 13 kills and an ace. Libero Zachary Desfosses contributed 7 digs to pick up the Titans Player of the Match.

Match 3: Northern Alberta Institute for Technology (NAIT) Ooks 3, Providence Pilots 2

In the third quarter-final, the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) champions, the NAIT Ooks squared off against the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Association (MCAA) winners, the Providence Pilots.The Pilots took a decisive 2-0 lead, winning the first sets 26-24 and 25-22. NAIT powered back in a game-changing third set, bringing the score within one, then going on to win 25-22. They didn’t stop there; the Ooks tied the game with a 25-18 victory in the fourth and took the game with a solid 15-8 final set win.

Noah Boschman from the Pilots put down 20 kills, earning him Player of the Game. On the opposite side, Shae McInyre was named Ooks Player of the Game, contributing 21 kills to his team’s victory.

Match 4: Humber Hawks 3, Camosun College Chargers 1

In the final match of opening day, the Humber Hawks looked strong on the floor and the Camosun Chargers came close to matching them in the opening set. The Hawks proved their strength, taking it 25-23 and followed up with a 25-16 dominant second set victory. The Chargers picked up momentum in the third set, leading most of the way and ending up securing the battle 27-25. Camosun continued to hold their own against the powerhouse, but lost out 25-19.

Kyle Stodola accounted for 11 kills during the match and earned the Chargers 4Imprint Player of the Match. Hawks setter, Josh Nicolson, picked up the accolade for the Hawks with his stellar performance.
The Chargers now face the Providence Pilots on Friday at 2:30pm in the second bronze quarter-final, while the Hawks advance to the semi-final against the NAIT Ooks at 8pm on Friday.
