CCAA Women's Basketball: Day Two Recap

Game 5: Augustana Vikings 80, MSVU Mystics 68

To begin the second day of the 2023 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship, the Augustana Vikings and MSVU Mystics played a back-and-forth first half in a bronze medal quarter-final matchup.

It would be the Mystics that got out in front, leading by five after the first quarter. The Vikings would bounce back outscoring MSVU by 10 in the second and lead at half by five.

Augustana lived around the net all game, scoring 42 of their points in the paint and extending their lead to 11 after three quarters. The Vikings would go on to win 80-68.

Jenessa Doctor of Augustana was named a 4imprint Player of the Game, as was the Mystics Katherine Khorovets. Doctor had 16-points on 50 per cent shooting. Khorovets had a 15-point performance, knocking down three threes.

Game 6: Red Deer Queens 80, Mohawk Mountaineers 70

The Red Deer Queens would end any hope for the host Mohawk Mountaineers to keep their medal quest alive, with the Queens winning 80-70.

Turnovers were the biggest difference in the contest with the Queens only turning it over 18 times and the Mountaineers giving up the ball 30 times.

Despite struggling to hold onto the ball, Mohawk stuck around early with Red Deer leading 23-22 after the first quarter. A tough second quarter offensively for the Mountaineers allowed Queens to extend their lead to nine before half.

The Mountaineers would use the third quarter to close the gap, getting as close as one-point, but the Queens would hold on to advance to the bronze medal semi-finals.

Sandra Garcia-Bernal of Red Deer and Angong Jacob from Mohawk were named 4imprint Players of the Game. Garcia-Bernal scored 11-points while Jacob recorded nine-points.

The Mountaineers will now play the Mystics in the 7/8 placement game.

Game 7: Géants de Saint-Jean 75, Humber Hawks 62

Géants de Saint-Jean clinched their first-ever berth to the CCAA National gold medal game after defeating the Humber Hawks 75-62.

Saint-Jean led the way for the entire game starting with a nine-point lead after the first quarter.

The Hawks would make a push in the second half, but Saint-Jean would hold their guard defensively to hold on for the win.

Sophie-Anne Bouffard of Saint-Jean was named a 4imprint Player of the Game, while the Humber Hawks Brittney English also received the honour for the second time this tournament. Bouffard had seven-points and grabbed 16 rebounds. English was good for 22-points with five made threes.

Humber will now play Red Deer in a bronze semi-final game.

Game 8: VIU Mariners 77, Dawson Blues 69

For the second consecutive season the VIU Mariners will appear in the CCAA National gold game with their 77-69 win over the Dawson Blues.

Easily the most entertaining game of day two it was the Mariners that jumped out to a seven-point lead in the opening quarter. The Blues would respond in the second quarter to take a one-point lead into halftime.

VIU, playing with a chip on their shoulder with memories of last years gold medal loss, came out firing in the third quarter. The Mariners would hold the Blues to nine points and regain a 10-point lead.

While Dawson would chip away in the final 10 minutes, VIU found ways to hold onto their lead for the win.

Harriette Mackenzie of the Mariners was named a 4imprint Player of the Game with a massive double-double of 24-points and 17-rebounds. Christine Geraldo from Dawson would also be named 4imprint Player of the Game with 16-points.

Dawson will move to the bronze medal bracket to play the Augustana Vikings.
