Chase named CCAA Coach of the Year

Ryan Chase of the Mount Allison Mounties has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

Chase was honoured during the 2023 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship, hosted by Mohawk College in Hamilton, ON.

Chase guided the Mounties to the best regular season in program history. Mount Allison placed atop the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) standings for the first time ever with a 16-2 record. The Mounties also finished the regular season as the top ranked team in the CCAA for the first time ever.

Chase, in his fifth year with the Mounties, has more than 20 years of coaching experience. He selflessly supports his student-athletes and staff.

The Mounties are very fortunate to have Chase as part of the coaching staff at Mounties Athletics, according to Marcel Dupuis, Manager, Athletics at Mount Allison University.

“It is the selflessness by which he conducts himself with his team, in respect to the time that he gives to his student-athletes that sets the example throughout the department,” said Dupuis. “His approach to discipline and staying true to a routine are some of the reasons why our Women’s Basketball team climbed to No. 1 in the country.”

Chase is also the Director of Operations for Basketball New Brunswick and provides coaching and player clinics across the province. He was the lead for the high-performance Women’s provincial programs. Chase was the mentor coach for New Brunswick Women’s U15 and Women’s U17 at the National Championships and the Canada Games.

Beyond the support for his own program, Chase is also a big supporter of the other Mounties varsity teams and is often seen cheering them on from the sidelines.

Other nominees for the CCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year award were Chris Weimer of the Capilano Blues (Pacific Western Athletic Association), Robbie Valpreda of the Concordia Thunder (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference), Janine Day of the Lambton Lions (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) and Georges Germanos of the Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers (Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec).

The CCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year recipient receives a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA.
