Mohawk to host CCAA’s best in Women’s Basketball

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Basketball National Championship will be hosted by Mohawk College in 2023.

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Assocation (OCAA) institution will host the event in Hamilton, ON, from March 15-18, 2023.

“The City of Hamilton has become a hub for basketball in our country,” said Matt Ferreira, Director of Athletics & Recreation at Mohawk and Tournament Chairperson. “We will utilize our community partnerships to enhance the championship experience and provide a spotlight to narrate the story of our CCAA student-athletes.”

Championship games will be held at the David Braley Recreation Centre (DBARC), which is located at Mohawk’s Fennell Campus. DBARC is a 65,000 square foot facility which features a 19,375 square foot triple gymnasium.

The tournament will feature eight teams from across Canada: conference champions from the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST), Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), OCAA, Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) and Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) as well as two wildcard teams and the host Mountaineers.

Mohawk, which has won two National bronze medals (1986 and 1990) last hosted CCAA Women’s Basketball in 1987. More recently, the Mountaineers hosted the 2015 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship.

“Over the past few seasons, Mohawk College has committed to the delivery of a high-performance program in the OCAA,” said Mai Nguyen, CCAA Women’s Basketball Convenor. “With its ‘New Era of Mountaineer Athletics’, Mohawk will look to compete for its first CCAA Championship in Women’s Basketball.”

Mohawk is situated on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishnaabeg Nations, within the lands protected by the Dish with One Spoon wampum agreement and is currently home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island.
