Day One Recap of the CCAA Men's Basketball Championship

Game 1 The CCAA National Basketball Championship officially started on March 12, 2025 and the first match-up was between the UNBSJ Seawolves from Saint-John’s, NB, and the Durham Lords from Oshawa, On. In the first quarter the teams were evenly matched and it ended with the Lords leading 13-12. In the second quarter, the Seawolves showcased their defensives skills as both teams fought to defend their nets. The Seawolves took a 29-24 lead by the end of the first half of the game, with a 100% free throw average (5 of 5). The third quarter started out slowly as Durham fought to regain their advantage. Despite the Lords bouncing back, the quarter ended with UNBSJ keeping their 39-38 lead. Durham fought hard in the final quarter to maintain their first place Pool A position, sparking the crowd’s excitement as the score shifted to 41-40 in Durham’s favour. The Lords scored multiple three-pointers, leading them to victory with a final score of 61-50. The player of the game for the Lords was #44 Mark Stoop and #13 Jack Fury-Miller for the Seawolves. The Durham Lords advance to play in the First Semi-Final game match up tomorrow (March 13) at 18:30 and the UNBSJ Seawolves fight for bronze in the First Quarter Final game at 13:00. |

Game 2 In the second game of the CCAA Championship, the Dynamiques de Brébeuf from Montréal, Qc played against the Keyano Huskies from Fort McMurray, AB. The first quarter started off strong as the Dynamiques took the lead right off the bat and secured a score of 26-16 due to the team’s high energy and the multiple shots scored by #11, Édouard Gauthier. As the second quarter began, the Huskies shot multiple three-pointers, but the Dynamiques kept hold of the lead and #10 Isaac Pierre-Louis scored the last shot of the quarter, ending it with a score of 46-25. After the half-time break, the Dynamiques maintained their twenty-point lead throughout the third quarter, despite Keyano player #5, Omeechi Wiiliams, earning 6 points with two three-pointer jump shots in under a minute. The third quarter ended with a score of 64-37. The final quarter was neck in neck and featured fierce game play by the Dynamiques, which led them to an 86-55 victory over the Huskies. The player of game for the Dynamiques was #11 Edouard Gauthier and the #7 Keenen Caribou for the Keyano Huskies. Brébeuf advances to play the Semi-Final Game One at 18:30, March 13th and Keyano will get a chance to rebound against UNBSJ in the Bronze Quarter Final game one at 13:00. |

Game 3 The third game of the CCAA Championship put championship host the Vanier Cheetahs, from Montreal, QC, up against the Briercrest Clippers, from Caronport, SK. During the first quarter, Vanier led with a powerful offensive play that earned them a 27-11 lead. The second quarter was marked by a Cheetahs’ point streak, scored by #7 Jeremy Lalonde. The Clippers didn’t back down, scoring 17 points despite the Cheetahs strong defense. The first half of the game ended with Vanier leading 50-39, earning the Cheetahs loud cheers from the local crowd. The third quarter started off slowly but picked up speed as both teams fought for control of the ball. Briercrest played more aggressively but Vanier maintained it’s 69-50 lead. In the last quarter, Briercrest fought to close the point gap, but despite lagging energies and a tense last few minutes of the game where it looked like the Clippers might overthrow the Cheetahs, Vanier kept its 83-73 lead. The player of the game for Vanier was #7 Jeremy Lalonde Hines, and #8 Jude Shepard-Hills for Briercrest. The Briercrest Clippers go on to vie for bronze in the Quarter Final game at 15:00, March 13th, while the Vanier Cheetahs advance to play in the Semi-Final game at 20:30. |

Game 4:Game four of the CCAA Championship was between the Humber Hawks, from Toronto, ON and the Capilano Blues, from North Vancouver, BC. Capilano and Humber were evenly matched during the first quarter, drawing excitement from the crowd as they faced off in a tight battle. Blues’ player #12 Kash Lang stood out, making 9 of the 25 points that contributed to their 25-20 lead by the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Hawks hustled with a strong offensive game, as each team vied for control. In the end, the Capilano Blues finished the first half of the game 47-43. The Humber Hawks came in strong in the third quarter and tensions escalated between the teams, as they fought for points. Capilano closed out the quarter 66-62. The final quarter was tense, with both teams scoring back to back as Humber tried to close the tight gap, leading to a repeatedly tied game during the last few minutes of play. In the end, the game was decided by two free throw shots, giving Humber a lead that they managed to keep until the end. Humber won the game 86-81. The player of the game for Humber was #21 Taujh Motiki-Stephens and #12 Kash Lang for Capilano. |
