CCAA Women's Soccer: Day 3 Recap

CCAA Women's Soccer: Day 3 Recap

Game 11: Seneca Sting 1, Red Deer Queens 0

The last match of Day 3 pitted the wildcard Seneca Sting from the OCAA against the ACAC champs, the Red Deer Queens.

The teams were evenly matched, with both exchanging opportunities from distance, but none overtly dangerous as the keepers from both squads were able to easily handle the attempts.

With the threat of rains oncoming, and the lack of any scoring, the possibility of another game being decided by penalties seemed unavoidable until the 70th minute, when the deadlock was broken. Seneca’s #4, Olivia Lamacchia, tucked away a ball sent in through the box at close range. With goals so hard to come by, Seneca locked things down and held for the win, punching their ticket to play in the Bronze Medal game, and a rematch against VIU.

Faythe Hoyte was named the 4-Imprint  Player of the Game for the Seneca, while Alisha Coules received the honor for Red Deer.

Game 10: *VIU Mariners 0, Humber Hawks 0 (*VIU 4-3 PKs)

The second match of the day saw the PACWEST Champs from VIU go up against the OCAA Champion Humber Hawks in the first bronze medal semi-final game of the day.

The game started on a slow note, with both teams playing tentatively with no one willing to take any chances, but that soon changed as the Hawks opened scoring in the 17th minute off of a goal from #17 Chantel Spalla.

Scoring chances developed for both sides as the game progressed, with neither being able to find the back of the goal, but VIU’s persistence and pressure paid off with the equalizer in the 81st minute, scored by #20 Kanae Yamamoto.

For the second time in as many days, the Hawks and their opponents were headed to the penalty spot to determine the winner. VIU prevailed as #22, Jade Dillabough, calmly tucked away her team’s final kick for the win and a place in Saturday’s Bronze Medal Game.

The 4-Imprint Players of the Game were Kiara Puntillo from the Hawks and Kanae Yamamoto from the Mariners.

Game 9: MSVU Mystics 1, Rouges de Saint-Boniface 0

The third day of competition kicked-off with the Mount St. Vincent Mystics and les Rouges de Saint-Boniface facing off, with both teams looking for their first win of the tournament.

Both teams demonstrated their desire to win, fighting hard for every position, but it was the  MSVU Mystics who drew first blood as they cracked the opposition’s defense in the 7th minute with a goal from #8, Katherine McEwen.

The teams exchanged opportunities during the remainder of the match, but neither managed to find the back of the net, with the final scoreline ending favour of MSVU 1-0.

The 4-Imprint Players of the Game were #12 Sophie Morham from St-Boniface and Annika Monroe (#11) from MSVU.
