SAIT named CCAA Championship host

The SAIT Trojans will host the 2021 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Basketball National Championship.

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) institution will host the event in Calgary, AB, from March 17-20, 2021. All games will be played at the Trojans Main Gymnasium, which is located inside the SAIT Campus Centre.

“SAIT has become one of the premier collegiate basketball programs in the country and its past and current leadership have provided many successful ACAC and CCAA championships due to high quality facilities and exceptional hospitality,” said Jonathan Lambert, CCAA Men’s Basketball Convenor.

The Trojans Men’s Basketball team set a single-season school record for victories during the 2018-19 season, when they finished atop the ACAC South Division with a conference best 20-1 record. Then, at the ACAC Championships, SAIT became the first team from Alberta in 15 years to win three consecutive titles.

The Trojans have recently hosted ACAC Women’s Basketball, Men’s & Women’s Soccer and Indoor Track.

SAIT last hosted the CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in 2010 and earned a silver medal on home court. The Trojans also hosted CCAA events in 2014 (Cross-Country Running) and 2005 (Women's Basketball).

“SAIT will unquestionably continue their tradition of high-quality championship hosting by providing an overall outstanding experience that all student-athletes will enjoy,” said Lambert.

The ACAC institution supports the growth of high-performance sport and competitive engagement for its students. An important part of this advancement is the ability to host a National Championship of this caliber, according to Dr. David Ross, President and CEO of SAIT.

“I have every confidence that the combination of our outstanding sports facilities, and the passion, dedication and experience of our SAIT team will result in a signature event that will make the CCAA proud,” said Dr. Ross.

The 2020 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship will be hosted by Humber College in Etobicoke, ON, from March 18-21.
