Bronze medal competitors solidified at CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship
Red Deer, March 8, 2024 – The Humber Hawks and Nordiques de Lionel-Groulx have advanced to Saturday’s bronze medal match at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship.

Match 9 - Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) Blazers 0, University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils 3

In Friday’s placement match, the UKC Blue Devils received an eight kill performance from All-Canadian Kaitlyn Legault and downed the CMU Blazers in three sets (25-17, 25-22 and 25-19). 

Legault, who is a second-year from Calgary, finished with a 0.467 hitting percentage, four digs, one assist and one of UKC’s seven blocks. Frances Cooke contributed eight kills for the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Champions. Third-year setter Claire Traynor had 17 assists and one of the Blue Devils’ 10 service aces.

Blazers’ first-year setter Chelsea Stewner connected with five-foot-10 outside hitter Layla Reichert for a match-leading 12 kills. Along with accumulating 29 assists, Winnipeg’s Stewner added eight digs, two kills and an ace. Both Sahra McKenzie and Annika Kornelsen recorded seven kills for the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) Champions.

Legault was named the 4imprint Blue Devils Player of the Match. 

Stewner was recognized as the 4imprint Blazers Player of the Game.


Match 10 - Capilano Blues 2, Humber Hawks 3

The Humber Hawks will play for national bronze. 

In the bronze semi-finals, the Hawks received a 13 kill performance from outside hitter Te-Anna Stephenson (0.258) and edged the Capilano Blues in five sets (23-25, 25-15, 25-18, 21-25 and 15-12). Teammate Cassidy Andrews contributed 13 kills and two of Humber’s seven blocks. Second-year libero Reese Cholette had 18 digs, two assists and a kill for the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Champions.

Nnya Mbaoma led the Blues offence with 24 kills. The third-year outside hitter from Nanaimo added 10 digs and three assists. Fifth-year outside hitter Vanesa Gatto accumulated 12 kills and 10 digs. Blues’ setter Jayden Easingwood, who is from Calgary, picked up 46 assists for the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) wildcard team.

Stephenson was honoured as the Hawks Player of the Game.

Mbaoma received the Blues Player of the Game award.

The Hawks will play the Nordiques de Lionel-Groulx in the bronze medal match on Saturday, March 9 at 6 pm.


Match 11 - Nordiques de Lionel-Groulx 3, Red Deer Polytechnic Queens 1

The Nordiques de Lionel-Groulx have an opportunity to win bronze on Saturday. 

The Nordiques received a match-high 15 kills from Jade Genereux and downed the RDP Queens in four sets (30-28, 25-20, 18-25 and 25-16) in the bronze semi-final. Emma Waskiewicz contributed 12 kills and Sandrine Methot added 10 kills for the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) Champions. Setter Anna Duboc-Ventura had 36 assists and one of the Nordiques’ seven aces.

Outside hitter Rachel Perry led the Queens with 13 kills. Red Deer’s Emma Holmes accumulated 12 kills and one ace. Libero Francesca Sandini had 15 digs and three assists for the hosts. 

Sandini was chosen as the 4imprint Queens Player of the Match.

Methot was named the 4imprint Nordiques Player of the Game.

The Nordiques de Lionel-Groulx will face the Humber Hawks for bronze on Saturday at 6 pm.
