Lemieux repeats as CCAA Golf Coach of Year

Benoit Lemieux of the Boomerang d’André-Laurendeau has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Golf Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

He was honoured during the 2021 CCAA Golf National Championships, which were hosted by St. Clair College in Windsor, ON.

“Under Benoit’s guidance, Cégep André-Laurendeau has become a powerhouse golf program in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) as well as a dominant force at the National level,” said Jay Shewfelt, CCAA Golf Convenor. “I am confident that he will have his student-athletes prepared and ready to contend at CCAA Championships once again this week.”

At the last CCAA Golf National Championships, hosted by André-Laurendeau in 2019, the Boomerang earned silver medals in both the men’s and women’s team events. In 2018, André-Laurendeau captured its first CCAA title in Men’s Golf.

Over the past few seasons, Lemieux has proven that he is a high-calibre coach according to Claude Morin, Athletic Director at André-Laurendeau.

“He is dedicated, and his athletes develop well as a result of his coaching,” said Morin. “He is able to get maximum effort from them, and they reach the next level with the experience they need.”

This season, his men’s team captured the provincial crown once again with a nine-shot victory at the RSEQ Championships. The women’s team placed third. The Boomerang are deeper and have also shown more consistency.

Lemieux has created a team atmosphere at André-Laurendeau that is healthy and enjoyable for his student-athletes. His goal is to provide the tools and time his golfers need to achieve their goals.

He also coaches at Collège de Montréal and is an assistant coach at Université de Montréal. Lemieux has coached eight NCAA D1 players.

Chris Bertram (University of the Fraser Valley) is the only other CCAA Golf coach to win back-to-back Coach of the Year awards.

Bill Wogden of the Georgian Grizzlies (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) and Stephen Yaniski of the SAIT Trojans (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) were also nominated for the honour, which has been awarded annually since 2010.

CCAA Coach of the Year recipients receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Award Ring Supplier of the CCAA.
