Windy conditions challenge golfers on Day One at the CCAA Championships

Three players are tied atop the leaderboard in the men's individual competition after the opening round at the 2021 CCAA Golf National Championships, presented by PING.

Despite wind gusts of up to 40 km per hour playing a factor in the opening round scores, Guillaume Dubois of Champlain St. Lawrence, Simon Menard of André-Laurendeau and 2021 CCAA All-Canadian Hugo Denis of Rafael de Terrabonne all shot a score of 71 after 18 holes at Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ontario.

Ten athletes appear to be in the hunt for the podium after the first round, with three players tied with scores of 72 while four other players are tied at 73.

In the men's team competition, the André-Laurendeau Boomerang hold a six-shot lead with a four-player combined score of 295. Sitting in second place is Rafael de Terrabonne (301), followed by the Champlain St. Lawrence Lions (302) and Medicine Hat Rattlers (303).

A pair of CCAA All-Canadian Humber Hawk teammates sit atop the leaderboard in the women’s individual competition. OCAA silver medallist Madison Ouellette is in first place with a first-round score of 74, followed by OCAA gold medallist Hayley McCallum who shot 75. Both Ouellette and McCallum were recognized as CCAA All-Canadians at the championship opening ceremony on Monday.

In third place with a score of 76 is Morgan Best of the John Abbott College Islanders, while Shannon Coffey of the host St. Clair Saints is one shot out of a podium position with a score of 77. In the women’s conference competition, Team OCAA 1 comprised of Ouellette, McCallum and Coffey hold a six-shot lead (+5) over their next closest competitors from Team RSEQ 1 (+11).

The St. Clair Saints Host Course, the Ambassador Golf Club, features aggressive bunkers and dramatic fescue banks which has challenged the athletes so far.
