Colley named CCAA Player of the Year
Jace Colley of the Holland Hurricanes has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.
He received the award at the 2019 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship banquet, hosted by Langara College in Langley, BC.
Colley led the Hurricanes to a perfect 21-0 record and first-place finish in the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA). Holland went on to defeat the Crandall Chargers in the ACAA Championship final to claim its seventh consecutive conference title.
“Jace is the player everyone looks up to for leadership and he exerts an undeniably strong presence in the games,” said David Munro, CCAA VP Programs. “He plays his best when the pressure is on and that helps elevate those around him to raise their game.”
A second-year guard/forward, Colley placed second in the ACAA with 23.5 points per game. He averaged 8.0 rebounds per game and led the conference with 134 defensive rebounds. He ranked second in the ACAA behind only teammate Roosevelt Whyley with a field-goal shooting percentage of 61.3. Colley also ranked among the leaders in blocks (22), assists (77) and steals (27).
Colley is a leader on and off the court at Holland and pushes everyone around him to reach high standards. He is actively involved in promoting the sport to the basketball fraternity and works with youth in camps on an ongoing basis.
“Jace combines leadership, ability and desire to best exemplify what it takes to be an outstanding student-athlete,” said Albert Roche, Athletic Director at Holland College.
Colley and the Hurricanes will look to upgrade their bronze medals from a year ago this week in BC. In fact, Holland has earned three straight CCAA bronze medals. Last March, Colley was named a first-team All-Star at CCAA Nationals in Laval, QC.
CCAA Player of the Year recipients receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.
Other nominees for the CCAA Men’s Basketball Player of the Year award were Harry Fayle of the VIU Mariners (PACWEST), Ryan McLaren of the Concordia Thunder (ACAC), Van Hutchinson Jr. of the Niagara Knights (OCAA) and Karim Mane of the Vanier Cheetahs (RSEQ).
