Humber Hawks earn 8th CCAA Men's Soccer Championship

Humber Hawks earn 8th CCAA Men's Soccer Championship

CCAA Championship Match:  Humber Hawks 1, Douglas Royals 0

One goal is all it took for the Humber College Hawks to win their eighth CCAA men's soccer title.

Exosse Kadiebue scored in the 10th minute of the game, as his Hawks defeated the Douglas College Royals 1-0 in their CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship gold medal match played Saturday evening at SAIT's Cohos Commons Field.

Douglas, who were looking for their first national title since 2005, earned the silver medal for the third time in program history – also doing so in 2017 and 2002.

The rest of the game saw Douglas struggle to find opportunities to score, as attempt after attempt were shut down by the Hawks' back line.

Humber had a chance to double their lead in the second half, but Douglas keeper Jacob McCall stood tall and kept the ball out of the net to keep his team in the game.

Following that, Humber slowed things down and did just enough to keep the Royals at bay until the final whistle.

Humber's Marcos Nunes and Douglas College's Mohamednur Ibrahim were named Players of the Game.

Bronze Medal Match: NAIT Ooks 3, Nomades de Montmorency 2

The NAIT Ooks knocked off two birds with one stone with their 3-2 extra time victory at SAIT's Cohos Commons Field on Saturday.

Not only did the Ooks avenge their quarter-final loss to the Nomades de Montmorency, but the win also earned them the CCAA Men's Soccer National Championship bronze medal.

The CCAA medal is the first for the Ooks program since they won the whole thing back in 2011.

Montmorency, on the other hand, leave Calgary still in search of their first-ever medal on the national stage.

The lone highlight of the first 45 minutes of play was a goal in the 14th minute by Julio Umali, whose reaction to it showed even he was surprised that it snuck under the crossbar and into the net for an early lead.

Montmorency evened things up in the 53rd minute when Saad Chaouki scored on a penalty kick. The PK was one of three awarded to the Nomades in the game, two of which they failed to score on – one sailing high over the net and the other being stopped by NAIT keeper Ryan Gillie.

When regulation solved nothing, the teams went to two 15-minute halves and NAIT did not wait long to regain their lead. Ousman Maheshe scored in the first minute of extra time to put his team up 2-1. The goal gave Maheshe eight for the tournament to lead all scorers.

Ansoumane Camara found the equalizer in the 106th minute of play, but the Ooks stormed right back and took the lead again when Matthew Zima scored just four minutes later to seal the win.

NAIT's Christian Lima and Montmorency's Mathieu Cool were named the Players of the Game.
