Trojans to host CCAA Men’s Soccer Championship

Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) will host the 2021 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Soccer National Championship.

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) institution will host the event Nov. 10-13, 2021, in Calgary, AB.

Wade Kolmel, Director of Athletics & Recreation at SAIT, will be the event’s Chairperson.

“SAIT’s reputation as Canada’s premier post-secondary institution, coupled with Calgary’s pre-eminence as a tourism destination, creates an ideal venue for one of the CCAA’s premier athletic events,” said Roy Daykin, SAIT CFO & Vice President of Corporate Services.

“I have every confidence that the combination of our outstanding sports facilities, and the passion, dedication and experience of our SAIT team will result in a signature event that will make the CCAA proud.”

All Championship games will be played at Cohos Commons Field, home of the Trojans. The state-of-the-art FIFA, Level 2 synthetic outdoor soccer field features a spectacular view of downtown Calgary skyline.

The eight-team tournament will feature six conference champions, including the debut of the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC). The MCAC champion will be joined by the top team from the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST), ACAC, Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) and Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA). The Trojans will automatically qualify as hosts, and will be joined by an eight participant, a wildcard team from the OCAA.

The Trojans have never medalled in CCAA Men’s Soccer. SAIT previously hosted this CCAA Championship in 1989.

SAIT last hosted CCAA Championships in Cross-Country Running (2014) AND Men’s Basketball (2010). The Trojans are slated to host the 2023 CCAA Men's Basketball National Championship.

The last CCAA Men’s Soccer Championship was hosted in 2019 by Durham College in Oshawa, ON. The host Lords (OCAA) defeated the VIU Mariners (PACWEST) 3-2 in the gold medal game. The Champlain Saint Lambert Cavaliers (RSEQ) blanked the Douglas Royals (PACWEST) 1-0 to earn the bronze medal.
