Day Three ends with four teams on their way home and three medals up for grabs at the CCAA WBB Championship
The atmosphere was damped slightly on Friday, with six teams eliminated from title contention, but Day 3 of the 2024 Canadian Colleges Athletic Conference (CCAA) Women’s Basketball Championship soon turned around. A PACWest clash and two RSEQ teams against two teams named Kings provided plenty of entertainment for basketball fans.

Match 9 - Douglas Royals 83, Okanagan Coyotes 56

In the tournament’s ninth game, the two PACWest squads, the Douglas Royals and the Okanagan Coyotes, did battle one last time. Douglas came out strong, making the first basket, but the score remained close. Okanagan called the first timeout to gain momentum, which increased the game's pace from both sides. At the half, the score was 36-29 in favour of Douglas.

The Royals outscored the Coyotes 24-13 through the third quarter, extending their lead significantly. Okanagan increased their shooting attempts by calling a timeout early in the fourth, but Douglas secured 28 defensive rebounds, icing out the Coyotes scoring opportunities. A high physicality finish to the game brought Douglas into bonus shooting, where they shot 67% from the free throw line. The Royals won their final game of the season, placing them seventh at the CCAA Women's Basketball Championships with a score of 83-56.

The player of the game for the Coyotes was #8 Ryley Bullock; she put up 13 points and 6 rebounds coming off the bench in key moments. The POG for Douglas was #4 Anja Tjernagel; she supported her team with 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 4 steals, contributing to her team's success in all aspects.

Match 10 - Géants de Saint-Jean 40, UKC Blue Devils 23

The first bronze medal semi-final matchup was between the Géants de Saint-Jean and the UKC Blue Devils. The Géants were able to execute their offense and their strong ability to rebound shots had them leading by 13 points after the first quarter. The Blue Devils called a timeout in the second quarter to try to freeze the Géants scoring opportunities, but Saint-Jean headed into the half with a score of 40-23.

The pushback from the Blue Devils was evident in their defense showing at the beginning of the third quarter, but the Géants took their offensive avantage and found chances to score into the fourth. Both teams showed strong defense then, providing minimal scoring opportunities, and leading the Géants to victory over the Blue Devils with a score of 67-37.

The player of the game for the UKC Blue Devils was #12 Emma Gargan, who contributed to the score sheet with 11 points. The POG for the Géants de Saint-Jean was #5 Deborah Demoah; she helped in her team’s victory with 12 points and 8 rebounds.

The Géants de Saint-Jean will move on to play in the bronze medal game on Saturday, March 16th, at 3:00 PM MDT.

Match 11 - Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers 71, TKU Eagles 59

The King’s Eagles faced off against the Ch. Saint-Lambert Cavaliers in the last contest of the day and the last before the medal matches begin. The energy was high as both teams had their sights set on qualifying for the bronze game. The Cavaliers took an early lead in the first quarter off of their strong offense, but the Eagles pushed back, narrowing their original point deficit to keep themselves within ten points of the Cavaliers. The score was 38-28 at the half, setting the stage for a hard-fought 20 minutes of basketball.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle, with both teams taking advantage of scoring opportunities. The scoring difference in the last two quarters was only 2 points, the Eagles scoring 31 and the Cavaliers scoring 33, as Saint-Lambert maintained their lead over the Eagles and secured the win with a final score of 71-59.

The player of the game for TKUwas #15 Jordana Rivet; a major factor in the Eagle’s fight, scoring 11 points, including two three-pointers late in the game. The POG for Saint-Lambert was #10 Marilou St. Pierre, who contributed to the Cavaliers success with 18 points and 5 rebounds.
