Lakeland’s King is the 2024 CCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year

Chris King of Lakeland College has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year.

King was honoured during the 2024 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship, hosted by Lakeland College in Lloydminster, AB.

The Rustlers achieved an undefeated 20-0 season, consistently ranking at the top of the Canadian standings, showcasing their dominance in the ACAC and on a national scale. Their impressive journey has earned them a spot in the nationals, set to unfold on their home court adding another layer of excitement for the team.

"Chris has developed into a successful coach at Lakeland who is now mentoring future female coaches to be strong leaders in the sport. Chris challenges his student athletes to always be better people on and off of the court," said Alan Rogan Lakeland College Athletic Director.

Now in his 16th season at Lakeland College, Chris King has established himself as a strategic leader. Two former players, currently serving as assistant coaches, are a testament to his impactful mentorship. Furthermore, the team's collective GPA of 3.11 reflects King's commitment to the holistic development of each player, emphasizing the value he places on their personal growth beyond the current season.

Mai Nguyen CCAA Women’s Basketball Convenor said, “Being able to finish the season undefeated is an incredible performance, in a very competitive conference. Chris King’s ability to turn his program around really shows you what kind of coach he is. Chris is passionate, knowledgeable, smart, and is a true ambassador for Women’s Basketball across the country. We look forward to seeing him and his team compete at this years National Championship.”

His influence extends beyond coaching. He oversees Rustlers Youth basketball, organizes community basketball camps, and manages HOOP Factory, a business dedicated to youth basketball development. Additionally, King coaches the U18 and U16 boys club basketball teams. He also hosts the weekly podcast "Hold my Clipboard" with one of his assistant coaches. The podcast discusses all aspects of ACAC basketball.

The CCAA Women’s Basketball Coach of the Year recipient receives a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA.
