CCAA Women’s Basketball returns to Nanaimo

CCAA Women’s Basketball returns to Nanaimo

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) will finally return to familiar territory in March 2022.

Vancouver Island University (VIU) will host of the 2022 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship. The Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) institution will host the event in Nanaimo, BC, from March 25-27. VIU’s Nanaimo Campus is proudly located on the unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation.

“We are extremely excited to return to Nanaimo for the Women’s Basketball National Championship,” said Mai-Anh Nguyen, CCAA Women’s Basketball Convenor. “They have done a great job hosting past championships and we are excited that VIU will be hosting once again.”

The tournament will feature eight teams from across Canada: five conference champions, two wildcard teams and the host VIU Mariners. All matches will take place at the VIU gymnasium.

"I am so thrilled that two years later, we will get to put all of our hard work and planning from 2020 into action and welcome teams from across the country to Nanaimo and to VIU," said Danielle Hyde, Interim Athletics & Recreation Director. "We have a rich history of hosting National Championships and I am confident that the visiting teams will have an incredible experience on Vancouver Island."

The Mariners have recently thrived under new head coach Tony Bryce; VIU placed fourth at the 2019 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship, hosted by Cégep de Sainte-Foy in Quebec.

The Mariners, PACWEST champions in 2013, 2016 and 2019, will be looking to earn CCAA gold for the first time since 1998.

Since 2007, VIU has hosted CCAA National Championships on five occasions: Men’s Volleyball in 2007, Women’s Volleyball in 2012, Women’s Basketball in 2015, Badminton in 2016 and Men’s Soccer in 2017.
