Women's Championship

Thursday’s Draws crossed the midway point for the championship with teams aiming to solidify their standing. The SAIT Trojans continued to roll, putting together a strong performance against the Assiniboine Cougars. The Trojans had two distinct runs where they scored multiple points and steals, leading to a 13-2 victory.

The PACWEST continued their winning ways as well, putting together a similar performance to the Trojans, in their 9-1 win over the Mohawk Mountaineers. In a battle featuring OCAA rivals, the Humber Hawks took the lead early against the Fanshawe Falcons and never relinquished it, resulting in a 9-3 finish for the Hawks.

Despite what the final score would suggest, the Augustana Vikings and Concordia Thunder battled in the most competitive match of the morning. CUE led 1-0 after three, before stealing a point in three straight ends. A steal of four in the seventh end put the match out of reach for the Vikings, conceding the match 9-1 to the Thunder.

The contest featuring the PACWEST and Assiniboine Cougars highlighted the women’s afternoon slate. The BC squad was the first on the board, but the teams traded the lead four times through the first five ends. Assiniboine then stole a pair of singles in the sixth and the eighth to extend their lead. The PACWEST answered back with single points of their own in the ninth and tenth, but the Cougars held on for the 7-6 win.

SAIT kept their undefeated streak alive but were tested by Fanshawe. The contest was all square after six, but the Trojans recorded five over the next two ends on route to a 9-5 victory.

Humber and Augustana were battling on the ice and in the standings. The Vikings were up three after one, but the Hawks went on a 9-1 run over the next five and an eventual 11-7 finish. The Concordia thundered out to a huge lead against Mohawk and never looked back in a dominant 17-1 performance.

Men's Championship

ACAC rivals, the SAIT Trojans and Red Deer Kings, opened the men’s competition with a calculated affair that featured four straight blank ends. Neither wanted to be the first to falter but SAIT went up 2-0 in the fifth. Red Deer answered with back-to-back singles. SAIT put up three in the eighth end and RDP could only muster one in the ninth, leading to the 5-3 Trojan victory.

The Sault Cougars, aiming to spoil Humber’s unbeaten streak, went up one on the Hawks in the first and pulled even in the third. Humber would record a couple of multi point ends through the middle of the match, but Sault answered with a few singles to keep it close. The Hawks locked up three in the ninth to put the game out of reach, resulting in a 9-4 finish.

The other morning Draw matches included a 9-2 victory for NAIT over Assiniboine and 10-3 win for Mohawk against Concordia.

The marquee matchup of the men’s evening Draw featured the two remaining unbeaten squads. Mohawk and Humber know each other well, and it showed in this back-and-forth contest. The Hawks led early but three from the Mountaineers in the fifth turned the tide in their favour. Humber put a couple more on the board, but Mohawk locked it up with three in the final two frames to claim top spot with an 8-4 win.

Red Deer and Sault battled in a spirited contest, with each team having a shot until the very end. The Cougars clawed their way back into a tie wit RDP at the end of the eighth end, but the King’s scored three in the ninth for the 9-6 victory.

NAIT took down their Edmonton neighbours Concordia 7-4, and SAIT rounded out the Draw with a 7-3 victory over Assiniboine.
