RSEQ cégeps to co-host Cross-Country Running Nationals

The 2020 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross-Country Running National Championships will be jointly hosted by Cégep de Chicoutimi and Cégep de Jonquière.

The Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) institutions will host the event Nov. 13-14, 2020.

“We have great faith in the commitment and professionalism of the athletics staff at these two institutions, and we know they will honour their commitments to the CCAA and its partners,” said Benoit Carrière, RSEQ Collegiate Program Director. “We wish them every success on this exciting journey.”

The cégeps will work in collaboration with the Club de gymnastique Sagym. The event will feature a Women’s 6 km race, followed by the Men’s 8 km race and finally a community race on the 2-km loop course.

“We want to give students from our cégeps and schools of the CSRDS and CSDLJ districts as well as our community a chance to run on the same circuit as our Canadian elite by hosting a community race after the event,” said Jean-Pierre Bolduc, Administrative Assistant, Student Services.

The Championships will be held on the territory of the City of Saguenay at the Parc de la Rivière-du-moulin, a location which hosts several annual cross-country competitions. The mixed-terrain course will include gravel, grass and sand.

Located two hours north of Québec City, the Fjord du Saguenay regional county municipality spans nearly 43,000 km2 and extends on either side of the Saguenay River, comprising thirteen municipalities. It boasts a vast and diverse territory that includes forests, mountains, lakes and rivers.

Since 1967, the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region has been home to the Cougars de Chicoutimi and Gaillards de Jonquière. Set in the historic core of this beautiful region, the Cégep de Chicoutimi and the Cégep de Jonquière feature among the 12 original member institutions in Quebec’s collegiate network.

The 2019 CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championships were hosted by GPRC in Grande Prairie, AB. The 2021 event is slated to be hosted by an Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) institution.
