Capilano to host CCAA’s best in Women’s Soccer

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Soccer National Championship will be hosted by Capilano University in 2024.

The Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST) institution will host the event in Squamish, BC, from Nov. 6-9, 2024.

Capilano University is named after Chief Joe Capilano, an important leader of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation of the Coast Salish Peoples. Capilano’s campuses are located on the territories of the LíỈwat, xʷməθkʷəỷəm (Musqueam), shíshálh (Sechelt), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and SəỈílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

The event promises to be a celebration of soccer, community, and the natural environment, according to Georgette Reed, Director, Athletics and Recreation at Capilano.

“CapU and its partners plan to host an unforgettable national championship in 2024, which will support and inspire student-athletes competing for a CCAA title,” she said. “Working together with local First Nations, Capilano University, and the District of Squamish, we will create a first-class competition and cultural experience for all in attendance.”

All CCAA Championship matches will take place at CapU Squamish's artificial turf field situated in a spectacular natural setting at the north end of Howe Sound – on the scenic Sea to Sky highway.

The tournament will feature eight teams from across Canada: Conference champions from the PACWEST, Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC), Ontario Colleges Athletic Assocation (OCAA), Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) and Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) as well as a CCAA wildcard team and the host Blues.

“We are excited to head out to Capilano, as it hosts this esteemed CCAA Championship for the first time,” said Marlene Ford, CCAA Women’s Soccer Convenor. “We look forward to being in Squamish for a quality tournament, which will showcase the very best collegiate Women’s Soccer teams in the nation.”

While the Blues have never hosted CCAA Women’s Soccer, they did host the inaugural Men’s Soccer event in 1983.

In 1999, Capilano was honoured with the CCAA Soccer Supremacy Award, which was presented to the Association’s most successful Men’s and Women’s Soccer program between 1974-1999. The Blues earned six CCAA Women’s Soccer titles in eight seasons from 1995-2001.

The 2023 CCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship will be hosted by Holland College of the ACAA in Charlottetown, PEI, from Nov. 8-11.
