CCAA Badminton Championships soar back into action at NAIT

The Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton, Alberta welcomed student-athletes, coaches, and support staff from across Canada for the first CCAA Badminton Championship in two years. The day began with opening ceremonies and the recognition of the CCAA Badminton All-Canadians, Men's and Women's Player of the Year and Coach of the Year. 

Men’s Singles

Both Narayan Ramdhani (ACAC, The King’s University) and Junal Sokar (OCAA, Seneca College) are undefeated at the end of the first day. Yuge Zeng from George Brown College (OCAA) finished day one with a 2-1 record, and Aidan Badcock-Parks of UKC (ACAA) finished day one with a 1-2 record. Both Smit Patel (ACAC, NAIT) and Jack Gillies (OCAA, UKC) were without a win, but both lost close games against their competitors. 

Women’s Singles

The end of day one concluded with I-Ting Liu from Seneca College (OCAA) being undefeated. Both Dapasha Prabhjot (OCAA, Seneca College) and Jasleen Kaur (ACAC, Concordia University) finished the first day with a 2-1 record. Fiona Purdy of UKC (ACAA) and Johnna Rymes of Concordia University (ACAA) concluded day one with a 1-2 record. Whitney Doucet of Université Sainte-Anne (ACAA) finished the day still seeking her first win.

Men’s Doubles

Akara Choopara and Anthony Tso from Seneca College (OCAA) go into day two with a 3-0 record. Team OCAA pair San Dang and Arpitraj Sinha from Fanshawe College and Team ACAA Bryce Mason and Sam White from UKC are heading into Friday with a 2-1 record. Brandon Gendre and Jay Patel from NAIT, representing the ACAC, are headed into day two of nationals with a 1-2 record. David Jay and Alex Stewart from The King’s University (ACAC) head into day two, looking for their first win of the competition.

Women’s Doubles


Both Team ACAC pair Abby Ledda and Cecila Wolski (The King’s University) and the team OCAA Victoria Duong and Praanjal Taneja (Humber College) are undefeated after day one the CCAA Badminton Championships. Salina He and Katie Liu of Seneca College (OCAA) concluded the first day with a 2-1 record after losing a close game to Duong and Taneja (21-19, 13-21, 10-21). Lindsay Murray and Amber Solomon of Mount Allison U (ACAA) ended the day with a 1-2 record. Team ACAC pair Priyanna Ramdhani and Abbey Taylor (Olds College) and Team ACAA Taryn Greco and Brianna Warwick (Mount Allison U) end the first day without winning. However, both teams have played well.

Mixed Doubles


Team OCAA Airi Moromisato and Sirapob Kongubon of Humber College and team ACAA Jack Ronahan and Anna Gillies of UKC finish day one of the tournament undefeated. Davis Wong and Ivy Ung of NAIT (ACAC) end day one with a 2-1 record after losing their last match of the day against Ronahan and Gillies (17-21, 17-21). Team OCAA Frederic Houle and Michelle Kozlowskyj of Collège Boréal head into day two with a 1-2 record. Both Team ACAA Josef Gonzalez and Mintra Taylor (Mount Allison U) and Team ACAC Shivansh Shivansh and Moominah Ali (NAIT) finished the first day without a win. Still, they were able to play competitively against their opponents.
