Johnna Rymes of the Concordia Thunder is the 2022 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Badminton Player of the Year.

In addition, Rymes (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) along with Tessa Liu of the Seneca Sting (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) and Anna Gillies of the UKC Blue Devils (Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association) have been named 2022 CCAA Women’s Badminton All-Canadians.

The student-athletes were honoured at the 2022 CCAA Badminton National Championships, hosted by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton, AB.

“I expect big things from Johanna at this year’s CCAA Championships,” said Michael Kopinak, CCAA Badminton Convenor. “Clearly, she would be successful in any event, and I believe she will vie for a national medal at these championships.”

Rymes picked up gold medals in both Women’s Singles and Women’s Doubles at the two ACAC regular season tournaments. At the ACAC Conference Championships, she earned silver in Women’s Singles and Mixed Doubles as well as a bronze medal in the team event.

The Devon, AB, native is in her second year of competing in Badminton for the Thunder. Rymes, who is working toward her Bachelor of Science Degree, is finding a balance between her elite skill level, being a leader on the team and her academic success.

“Johnna has had an outstanding season for the Thunder badminton team and the year off hasn’t deterred her as she’s stepped into a leadership role on this team,” said Nathaniel MacLellan, Interim Director, Athletics & Recreation at Concordia University of Edmonton. “She’s showing off her superior skill and competitiveness, while still being able to maintain the respect of her coaches and keep up with her academic success.”

The CCAA Women’s Badminton Player of the Year receives a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA. In addition, CCAA Women’s Badminton All-Canadians receive a $100 e-gift from Li-Ning, the Official Badminton Equipment of the CCAA.
