St. Clair to host top CCAA runners

St. Clair to host top CCAA runners

St. Clair College will host the 2024 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross-Country Running National Championships.

The Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) institution will host the event Nov. 8-9, 2024, in Windsor, ON.

Both the Women’s 6 km and Men’s 8 km races will take place at Malden Park on a mixed terrain course with various surfaces that include pavement, grass, gravel, and dirt. This course is featured in all local high school, college, and university cross-country running races.

In addition to being the host course for five separate OCAA Championships, Malden Park was also used when St. Clair last hosted the CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championships in 2003.

“St. Clair hosted a spectacular provincial championship in 2019 and we know that the Saints Athletics department will put on an excellent CCAA Championships event,” said Darcy Brioux, CCAA Cross-Country Running Convenor.  “We are all excited to be returning to Ontario once again for some wonderful hospitality in the Windsor area.”

The last three CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championships have been hosted by the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC).

While the Saints are no strangers to hosting at the provincial level, they’ve become quite familiar at the national level as well. St. Clair recently hosted the 2021 CCAA Golf National Championships and this fall, the Saints will host the 2023 CCAA Men’s Soccer National Championship.

“St. Clair College is extremely proud to once again host a CCAA Championship,” said Ted Beale, Athletic Coordinator at St. Clair College. “We are very excited to be the centre of attention for national college cross-country running, while providing a very memorable experience for these gifted athletes at the pinnacle of their competitive efforts.”

In hosting this event, the Saints will also draw on the experience of having participated in each CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championships since 2011.

St. Clair runners have enjoyed recent success at Nationals, particularly in the Men’s Team event. The Saints earned a gold medal in 2018, silver in 2019 and bronze medals in both 2021 and 2022.

St. Clair College sits on the three fires confederacy’s traditional territory of the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi nations.

The 2023 CCAA Cross-Country Running National Championships will be hosted by Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (DAL AC) of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) from Nov. 10-11.
