The 2020 CCAA Badminton National Championships hosted by the University of Toronto Mississauga began today, welcoming student-athletes from across the nation to the City of Mississauga. The day started with a Parade of Participants from Alberta, the Atlantic Coast and Ontario followed the reading of the CCAA Athlete's Oath.
Here are the results from day one of competition:
Women's Singles
2020 Player of the Year and All-Canadian Takeisha Wang (Concordia University of Edmonton, ACAC) went undefeated in the first day of the championship. First year student and All-Canadian, Huyen Le (George Brown College, OCAA) also went undefeated in her first CCAA Nationals debut. Priyanna Ramdhani (Olds College, ACAC Wildcard) and Margaret Anderson (UTM, OCAA-Host) both remain winless at the end of day one.
Men's Singles
2020 CCAA Player of the Year Roymond Kim (NAIT, ACAC) finishes the day along with Pranav Satheesh (Conestoga College, OCAA-Wildcard) with a record of 3-0. 2019 CCAA Badminton Player of the Year Ramnish Kumar (Humber College, OCAA) finishes his day 2-1, losing to a nail-biting round one match against Satheesh (21-18, 21-16, 21-15).
Women's Doubles
CCAA Gold Medalist and All-Canadian Chloe Rowe and Susanna Quach (Humber College, OCAA) as well as Jasleen Kaur and Johnna Rymes (Concordia University of Edmonton, ACAC) lead the pack into day two with a record of 3-0. Kate Huang and Danna Biboso (UTM, OCAA-Host) battle hard at their first Nationals appearance remain winless heading into day two.
Men's Doubles
Team OCAA pair Faizan Shaikh and Saatvik Mahajan of Seneca College and Team ACAC pair Nicolas Pittman and Braxton Wong finished the day with a 3-0 record. CCAA All-Canadian Bryce Mason and partner Jack Ronahan (University of King's College, ACAA) finished the day with a 2-1 record, losing to Team ACAC in their final match of the day 2-1 (22,20, 21-16, 22-20).
Mixed Doubles
Poy Lo and Christine Nguyen (Seneca College, OCAA) and Eyota Kwan and Alexander Fung (NAIT, ACAC), head into day 2 undefeated. Victoria Duong and Desmond Chan (Humber College, OCAA Widcard) split the day 2-1 losing to Team OCAA in round one. Kyle Yip and Xintong Zhou (UTM, OCAA-Host) and Connie Juang and Luc-Ly Nguyen (NAIT, ACAC Wildcard) still look to find their first win of the championships.
