As part of the Wolfpack Community Outreach Program, student-athletes at TRU were involved in a list of community activities that include: the Terry Fox Run, CIBC Run for the Cure, Raise a Reader, Wendy's Dreamlift, World Literacy Day, and Toys for Kids (Christmas event). An adopt a school program where the athletes were put on a team with athletes from other sports was also part of the program where they were then assigned to a school where they paid a visit at least 4 times during the year to help with: sports teams, physical education classes, and reading to kids amongst other things.
"Over the last 8 months, our athletes have been involved in a number of activities to increase awareness of our programs and teach our athletes that not only do they get a great education at our school and are taught by great coaches but that they learn what it takes to be a valued member of our community," Larry Read, Sports Information Officer, Thompson Rivers University.
Not only does the community gain from these types of programs but the athletes themselves walk away with great life experiences. "From a student-athlete perspective, they are recognized in the community, resulting in many groups and students coming out to support them in their games and matches. They also learned what great events go on in the community and they garnered self confidence through public appearances, school visits, and community events, which will help them in the real world. They also made connections with influential people in the community which might help in a job after graduation," stated Read.
The Thompson Rivers University's Wolfpack Community Outreach Program has made a great difference in the community of Kamloops and many have felt their presence in both direct and indirect ways. Congratulations to TRU, winners of the 2008-09 CCAA Community Service Award.
The CCAA would like to acknowledge all the candidates for their quality submissions for the Community Service Award. Each institution had a positive impact in their communities and should be congratulated for their time and effort.
The Canadian Colleges Athletic Association is a national sport organization that enriches the lives of student-athletes through intercollegiate competition.
