Kim named CCAA Player of the Year

Roymond Kim of the NAIT Ooks is the 2020 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Badminton Player of the Year.

Kim received the award during the 2020 CCAA Badminton National Championships banquet, hosted by the University of Toronto Mississauga.

“Roymond is the true definition of a student-athlete, as he is a winner both within the classroom and on the court,” said Michael Kopinak, CCAA Badminton Convenor. “As a fan of the sport, I look forward to watching him take on the best badminton players in the country.”

In his second year of eligibility, Kim dominated Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) competition, going undefeated in Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles play to lead the Ooks to a tie for first-place finish in the regular season conference standings. In three tournaments, he earned a pair of first-place finishes in Men’s Singles and Men’s Doubles as well as a first-place finish in Mixed Doubles.

At the ACAC Badminton Championships, Kim earned a gold medal in Men’s Singles and led the Ooks to the coveted team title.

At NAIT, Kim has developed into a leader both on and off the court. His work ethic transfers from the court to the classroom and his passion and dedication make him a great role model for other student-athletes.

Kim can always be found encouraging teammates and opponents during competition. He has a great attitude and always showcases fair play and sportsmanship.

“Roymond is the most valuable student-athlete on our team this year,” said Sinead Cheah, head coach of the Ooks. “He shows superior skill and competitiveness while still being able to maintain respect for his coaches and keep up with his academic success, overall one of the most well-rounded players this team has seen.”

Kim is also a top coach at B-Active Badminton in Edmonton. He is regarded as a respected and knowledgeable coach who is helping develop some of Alberta’s best young players.

Other nominees for the CCAA Men’s Badminton Player of the Year award were Arpit Taneja of the Humber Hawks (Ontario Colleges Athletic Association) and Bryce Mason of the UKC Blue Devils (Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association).

CCAA Player of the Year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA National Championship banquet.
