CCAA Men's Soccer: Bronze Semi-finals Recap

Match 11: St. Clair Saints 2, VIU Mariners 1

St. Clair opened the scoring at the 12-minute mark of the second bronze medal semi-final, capitalizing on the penalty shot that was awarded to them. Massimo Pollard calmly stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the other way.

Right before the end of the half, a seemingly routine goal kick from the Saints was quickly countered by the Mariners. The team skillfully moved the ball up field, beating several defenders, culminating with a buzzer beating goal from Grayson Chalifoux.

The beginning of the second half saw both teams out together quality chances but neither were able to convert. The match appeared destined for PK, but in the 88th, St. Clair’s Moussa Nazim redirected a cross from the winger into the back of the Mariner’s net, sealing the Host Team’s spot in the Bronze Medal Match.

Match 10: Keyano Huskies 3, Aigles d’Ahuntsic 2

The first bronze medal semi-final was a spirited contest that saw five goals and four red cards. Both teams finished the match with nine men each. Ahuntsic got off to a hot start, scoring two goals in a 20-minute span. In the 12th minute, Kundalini Beloved Dominique opened the scoring followed by Hocine Negri soon after. who got on the board as well.

It seemed like Les Aigles had the match under control, but the Huskies scored a pair right before the half. William Ly got the Huskies on the board with a goal in the 36th minute. Then, James Bartha tied the match up heading into the locker rooms in the 42nd minute.

Ahuntsic came out firing in the second half but the Huskies turned away all attempts. In the 77th minute Keyano ended the stalemate when James Bartha flicked in a corner kick to give his team the lead. Immediately following the goal, emotions began to run high for both teams and several cards were given out by the Official. With both teams now down to nine men, Ahuntsic pressured until the last second but were unable to find the equalize. Keyano persevered and advanced to play for the Bronze Medals.

Match 9:  Brandon Bobcats 2, UKC Blue Devils 2 (PKs 4-1 Brandon)

The first match of the day featured the quickest goal of the championship as Ndifreke Akpan of the Brandon Bobcats opened the scoring inside the first minute of play. Once the Blue Devils were able to collect themselves and play their game, they were rewarded with a goal of their own as Keynan Harvey slid one pass the keeper to tie the game. Despite strong play from the Bobcats, UKC scored another in the 39th minute from Coleton Walker, taking the lead into the half.

In search of their conference's first ever win at the CCAA National Championships, Brandon battled hard and was rewarded when Camilo Rodriguez netted the equalizer in the 72nd minute. Things would then remain deadlocked through 90 so fans were treated to the first round of PKs at the championship.

The first shooters for each team converted their penalty. The Blue Devils were stopped on their second attempt while the Bobcats scored on theirs.  UKC then sent their third of the post while Brandon converted again. UKC’s fourth found the back of the net, giving the Blue Devils some hope, but the Bobcats answered with another, giving the team their first win of the Championship.
