Women’s Volleyball Nationals returns to Garneau

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship will return to Cégep Garneau in 2020.

The Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) institution will host the event in Québec, QC, from March 11-14, 2020.

“Garneau has been a perennial powerhouse in Women’s Volleyball in the RSEQ and CCAA,” said Fred Batley, CCAA Women’s Volleyball Convenor. “They have hosted CCAA Nationals in the past and there is a rich history within the community, so I have no doubt this championship will be well received by the student body and community.”

Garneau hosted the 2003 and 2005 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championships. In 2011, the Cégep also hosted CCAA Men’s and Women’s Soccer Nationals.

The Élans have medaled an impressive 18 times at CCAA Women’s Volleyball Nationals, including nine gold medals. From 1996 to 2006, Garneau earned CCAA gold eight times – including a thrilling five-set victory over Malaspina University College (now Vancouver Island University) on home soil in 2003.

“There will be some exciting volleyball played in Quebec City and with the new renovations, it will be an excellent site for CCAA Nationals,” said Batley.

The tournament will feature eight teams from across Canada: five conference champions, two wildcard teams and the host Élans.

“The tradition of excellence of the Élans sport program reflects a desire to perform and to provide student-athletes with opportunities to grow through sport, said Eric Lavigne, Assistant Director of Student Activities and the Centre sportif. “Hosting Canada’s best is an opportunity to enrich the history of collegiate sport inside the walls of our institution.”

The 2019 CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship will be hosted by Niagara College in Welland, ON, from March 6-9.
