Match 1: Humber Hawks - 3 vs. MSVU Mystics - 0
The Humber Hawks won their first match of the CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship against the MSVU Mystics in three straight sets.
It was the first game of the tournament, and started very close with the opening set going to the Hawks, which they won 26-24. The Mystics battled back in the second set, and it went down to the wire again. But, like the first set, the Hawks came out on top taking the set 25-22. In the third and final set, MSVU started out strong by taking a 7-3. Then, the Hawks stormed back and won the thrilling set 25-21.
Player of the Game for the Mystics was Maggie Birney, who had five kills to go along with one service ace. For Humber, the Player of the Game was Deborah Mitchell, who led the Hawks with 12 digs.
Match 2: VIU Mariners - 3 vs. Briercrest Clippers - 2
The Vancouver Island University Mariners won a five set thriller and upset the third ranked Briercrest Clippers in their first game of the CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship.
Both teams came out to a good start in the first set. After going back and forth all set, the Clippers won it 27-25. The Mariners picked up their game in the second set though, winning 25-22. The third and fourth sets were both equally as close, with Briercrest taking the third 25-23. In the fourth, VIU stormed back to take the set 25-22 and forced a fifth and decisive set.The Mariners never lost the momentum they gained from the fourth set, and won the final set 15-9.
Player of the Game for VIU was Chantal Cummings, who had two kills and six digs to go along with one service ace. Taking home the honour for Briercrest was Sam Zacharias, who racked up a team-leading 21 kills and 16 digs.
Match 3: Élans de Garneau - 3 vs. Holland Hurricanes - 0
Les Élans de Garneau won their first match at the CCA National Championship against the host-team the Holland Hurricanes. The Hurricanes were ranked eighth going into the tournament and put up a good fight, but were no match for the first ranked Élans.
Garneau came out and took the first set pretty easily winning 25-17. In the second set, the Canes shook off the first-set nerves and battled all throughout the set. But, in the end, les Élans took the set 25-23. The Canes left it all on the court in the third set, but it proved not enough as Garneau took a once close set, and ended up winning 25-18.
Player of the Game for les Élans was Maud Chapleau, who led her team in kills with 11 and also had nine digs. For the Hurricanes, the Player of the Game went to Sydney Foy, who had 10 kills and digs each.
Match 4: King's Eagles - 3 vs. COTR Avalanche - 0
The King’s University Eagles won their first match of the CCAA Women’s Volleyball National Championship as they bet the College of the Rockies Avalanche in straight sets.
The Eagles started strong in the first set, and continued throughout the set to win it 25-16. The second set was no better for the Avalanche as King’s University continued their dominance and took the set easily, winning 25-11. Eagles carried this on through the third set and finished the match by taking the final set 25-18.
Jocelyn Van Ryk, who had seven kills to go along with three service aces, was the Player of the Game for the Eagles. For the Avalanche, the honour went to Kelsey Thompson, who had four kills and five digs.
Day Two Preview
The Holland Hurricanes will try to bounce back tomorrow at 3 p.m. when they take on the COTR Avalanche in one of tomorrow’s bronze quarter-finals. The other bronze quarterfinal game will be between the MSVU Mystics and the Briercrest Clippers. The game is at 1 p.m. and will kick off tomorrow’s matches.
In the championship semi-final games, the first comes at 6 p.m. when the Humber Hawks battle it out with the VIU Mariners. The second immediately follows and will feature les Élans de Garneau and King’s University Eagles.
All games will be played at the Holland College Centre for Engagement.
