2019 WSC: Day One Recap from Edmonton

MATCH 4: Ch. Saint-Lambert Cavaliers 4, Concordia Thunder 2

The Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers opened defence of their CCAA title with a 4-2 victory over the host Concordia Thunder.

Cassandra Provost's rocket shot from 28 yards out gave the Cavaliers an early 1-0 lead in the 8th minute. CCAA All-Canadian Noémi Paquin then converted on a cross to give Champlain a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute.

Kennedy Hay put the Thunder on the board two minutes into the second half. But the Cavaliers responded in the 49th minute on Provost's second of the game.

Champlain opened up a 4-1 lead on a Laurie-Ann Moïse marker in the 57th minute. But the Thunder fought back, cutting the lead to 4-2 on Hay's second of the match off a free kick in the 61st minute.

The 4imprint Players of the Game were Provost from the Cavaliers and Hay from the Thunder.

MATCH 3: VIU Mariners 3, Seneca Sting 2

The PACWEST champion VIU Mariners defeated the Seneca Sting 3-2 in the third quarter-final of the day. CCAA All-Canadian Chloe Gummer scored a hat trick to lead VIU.

Gummer opened the scoring for the Mariners in the 15th minute. Seneca's own CCAA All-Canadian Sona Makulova levelled the score for the Seneca Sting on a free kick in the 38th minute.

Gummer added her second of the game in the 54th minute. She then connected off a cross for her third of the contest in the 68th minute.

Faith Metcalfe-Simiana rounded out the scoring with a late marker for Seneca.

The 4imprint Players of the Game were Gummer of the Mariners and Korina Lyte of the Sting. 

MATCH 2: Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy 4, NAIT Ooks 0

The Dynamiques de Sainte-Foy, the RSEQ wildcard team, blanked the ACAC champion NAIT Ooks 4-0 in the second match of the day.

Just two minutes into the contest, Laurie Champagne connected off a corner kick to give the Dynamiques an early lead. Rosalie Dumont's blast from the edge of the box in the 18th minute doubled Sainte-Foy's lead to 2-0.

Dumont added her second goal of the game in the 55th minute before Léa-Jeanne Fortier connected from 22 yards out in the 69th minute.

The 4imprint Players of the Game were Dumont of the Dynamiques and Rebecca Stienwand of the Ooks.

MATCH 1: Fanshawe Falcons 3, Holland Hurricanes 0

The Fanshawe Falcons defeated the Holland Hurricanes 3-0 in the opening match at the 2019 CCAA Women's Soccer National Championship. It was a frigid start to the National Championship, with chilly temperatures in Edmonton, AB.

The OCAA champion Falcons had the majority of possession and controlled much of the game against their counterpart, the ACAA champions. 

Nicole Nielsen opened the scoring for the Falcons in the 2nd minute. Then, Fanshawe captain Chelsea Zavitz's shot from 20 yards out found the back of the net in the 39th minute.

The Falcons took a 3-0 lead early in the second half on a Kayla McQueen marker in the 48th minute.

The 4imprint Player of the Game honours went to Fanshawe's Zavitz and Hurricanes goalkeeper Nicole McInnis.
