GAME 1: GPRC Wolves 5, St. Thomas Tommies 0
The GPRC Wolves took on the St. Thomas Tommies in first game of the CCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship quarterfinals on Wednesday. The game was well played throughout with the GPRC controlling the play most of the time. The score was 1-0 at half time. The second half was packed full of action with GPRC scoring their second goal in the first five minutes. Ashtyn Haycock was able to score their third goal another five minutes into the half.
Players of the Game were Kaleigh Roberts of St. Thomas and Shelby Henley of GPRC.
GAME 2: Champlain Saint-Lambert Cavaliers 1*, Algonquin Thunder 0 (*5-4 PKs)
The game was evenly played throughout the first half with a slight edge from Saint-Lambert. Attempted goals were shut down as both teams were quite strong. Olga Massombo, Adrianna Dmulchalsky and Georgia Illiopoulos lead their teams with a defense-first mentality.
Algonquin’s Jenna King started off the second half with a spectacular by-the-fingertips save to keep the score at 0-0. Karima Lemiere and Olivia Mazerello were the power players to watch. The second half was much of the same back and forth with action ramping up by Algonquin’s Melissa Gilligan who took on two defenders in an entertaining effort to fight for a goal.
The game went on to penalty kicks with Algonquin and Saint-Lambert neck and neck. Cavaliers captain Marie-Phillipe Beauvais buried the tie-breaking kick with a final score of 5-4.
Players of the Game were Saint Lambert's Noemie Longpre and Algonquin Maddie Kelly.
GAME 3: Douglas Royals 1, NAIT Ooks 0
The early stages of the game were choppy with multiple throw-ins by both teams. Neither team was able to establish a strong flow as they tried to get control of the ball. As the teams became more comfortable, the game picked up speed with both teams making strong attempts at connections for goals. Douglas’ Sam Kell and NAIT’s Alana Mawhinney made names for themselves in the first half with strong positioning and quick movements. Added time did not result in any goals scored.
The first 10 minutes of the second half had both teams exploding with a newfound, excited energy. NAIT’s Kayleigh Moan and Kassy Jajczay dazzled spectators by providing two great scoring chances. Martina Pettenon of the Royals powered through however and scored the first and only goal of the game.
The players of the game were Marissa Webb from NAIT and Martina Pettenon from Douglas College.
GAME 4: Elans de Garneau 7, Dalhousie Rams 0
The game started with Garneau taking control of the Dal AC side of the field. Twenty minutes into the fist half of the game, Garneau quickly scored. Ariane Langlois of Garneau followed up with a pinball shot off-post to score their second and third markers only moments later, bringing the score to 3-0.
As action continued, Garneau capitalized on a penalty kick to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Dal AC hustled and put forward a valiant effort during the final 10 minutes of the first half. However, a free kick from Garneau gave them another goal ending the first half at 5-0.
Dal AC charged on to the field in the second half. They were able to keep the ball away from their goal and continued to press back Garneau. Garneau was given a free kick, but, Summer Nasr of Dal AC made a great save for the Rams. Winnie-Melvyne Chebou and Eve Malo became the players to watch for from Garneau in the second half.
The players of the Game were Shanice Maxwell from Dal AC and Eve Malo from Garneau.
