Pair of CCAA student-athletes invited to Canada Basketball U19 tryouts at Humber

Canada Basketball’s Women’s High Performance program is pleased to announce the 24 athletes invited to participate in the U19 National Team invitational tryouts at the Humber College’s North Campus in Toronto from July 2-4, 2017.

Among the invitees are Myriam Leclerc (inset) from Cégep Sainte-Foy and Andrea Torres (pictured above) of Collège Montmorency.

Leclerc, a 5-foot-8 guard from Saint-Roch-de-Richelieu, suited up for the Dynamiques last season in the RSEQ.

Torres, a 5-foot-11 forward from Terrebonne, QC, led the Nomades to an RSEQ title last spring and an appearance at the 2017 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship in Edmonton, AB.

“After a competitive evaluation process, we have invited 24 athletes who hope to represent Canada in Italy at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2017,” said Denise Dignard, Director, Women’s High Performance. “We look forward to a competitive tryout as our program continues its international development.”

Training camp will follow tryouts from July 5-11 at Humber College - North and the finalized team roster will travel to Voiron, France for an exhibition tournament.  Canada is set compete against 3rd ranked France, 7th ranked Australia and 9th ranked China from July 15-17.

The team will then travel to Italy to compete at the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2017 where they look to improve upon their 8th place finish from 2015. The women tip-off the tournament on July 22 against 15th ranked Korea at 8:00 AM EST in Udine, Italy.

Carly Clarke (Ryerson University) takes the helm in her second year as Head Coach. Clarke is joined by Assistant Coaches Ryan Thorne (McGill University) and Claire Meadows (UBC Okanagan) along with Performance Analyst, Nick DeAdder (Acadia University).

Canada is currently ranked 4th worldwide in the FIBA youth girls rankings.
