St. Thomas to host CCAA National Championship

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball National Championship will be hosted by St. Thomas University in 2020.

The Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) institution will host the event in Fredericton, NB, from March 11-14, 2020. The competition site will be the Grant Harvey Centre, which will feature a state-of-the-art sport court.

“We are pleased to be heading to Fredericton, NB, where there has been a tradition of winning in recent seasons with the Tommies,” said Ray Sarkis, CCAA Men’s Volleyball Convenor. “St. Thomas has history in hosting outstanding championships and our student-athletes can certainly expect great eastern hospitality.”

The tournament will feature eight teams from across Canada: five conference champions, two wildcard teams and the host Tommies.

Last season, St. Thomas claimed its eighth ACAA title in Men’s Volleyball and advanced to the 2018 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship, hosted by Camosun College in Victoria, BC.

“We are confident in our ability to host this prestigious event and are eager to impress our CCAA family with our East Coast hospitality and our ability on the court,” said Michael Eagles, Director of Athletics at St. Thomas University.

St. Thomas has twice hosted CCAA Nationals – Men’s Volleyball in 2005 and Cross-Country Running in 2010. At the regional level, St. Thomas recently hosted the 2013 ACAA Basketball Championships, 2014 ACAA Soccer Championships, the 2015 AUS Cross Country Championships and the ACAA Volleyball Championships in both 2012 and 2018.

In 2014, the Tommies hosted the CIS (now U SPORTS) Women’s Hockey Championships.

“It is our honour and privilege to host this National Championship and to provide a great student experience to the University and College athletes travelling to Fredericton to compete in this event,” said Dawn Russell, President and Vice-Chancellor at St. Thomas University.

The 2019 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship will be hosted by Red Deer College in Red Deer, AB, from March 6-9.
