Jay Tremonti of the Douglas Royals has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Volleyball Coach of the Year.
He received the award at the 2019 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship banquet, hosted by Red Deer College in Red Deer, AB.
In his third year as head coach of the Royals, Tremonti guided Douglas to an impressive 20-4 record and first-place finish in the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST). It was quite the turnaround season for a Royals squad that went 11-13 a year ago.
“Jay has really stepped things up at Douglas College and the Royals had an outstanding season in the PACWEST,” said Ray Sarkis, CCAA Men’s Volleyball Convenor. “He is building a program which will be a contender year in and year out in the PACWEST and CCAA.”
Last month, Tremonti was named PACWEST Coach of the Year and a couple of his players were also honoured at the conference championships: Royals second-year outside hitter Reid Marriott was named the PACWEST Player of the Year, while Max Haronga took home PACWEST Rookie of the Year honours.
“Jay has rebuilt the Douglas College Men’s Volleyball program from scratch and has positioned the Royals back into contenders,” said Brian McLennon, Associate Director, Athletics at Douglas. “There is no doubt the Royals will be positioned for success for years to come.”
Tremonti, a former member of the Toronto Varsity Blues (U Sports), is the Technical Director for Volleyball BC and serves as the PACWEST Men’s Volleyball Convenor.
CCAA Coach of the Year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA Championship Awards Banquet.

In just his third season at the helm of the Kodiaks program, Gibos led Lethbridge to a 22-2 record and second-place finish in the ACAC South Division. The Kodiaks shot up the standings this season with a 12-point improvement. Gibos has a genuine concern and care for his student-athletes and brings incredible commitment and dedication to them every day. He is also involved with summer camps, community outreach camps and development clinics throughout Southern Alberta. |
Harris guided the Condors to a 10-8 record and a fifth-place finish in the competitive OCAA West Division. He strongly encourages his student-athletes to always respect themselves, teammates, coaches, opponents and officials. Harris is also a longtime high school volleyball coach and organizes a yearly tournament with the assistance of Condors players. In his final season of coaching in the OCAA, the well-respected Harris ensured a succession plan was in place for his coaching staff. |
It was an impressive first season at Cégep de Sherbrooke for Ouellet, who led the Volontaires to an 11-5 record and second-place finish in the RSEQ. He has focused his approach on teaching a creative and aggressive game as well as an understanding of on-court tactics. Ouellet arranges academic and nutrition monitoring as well as mental preparation consultations. He is also an assistant coach with the Sherbrooke Vert & Or (U Sports) and the Programme Relève de Volleyball Québec. |
Mallet guided St. Thomas to a first-place finish in the ACAA with a 12-3 record. The Tommies improved in almost every major statistical category this year, Mallet’s second season at St. Thomas. His goal is to build a program that is synonymous with winning and Mallet works hard at recruiting and then developing student-athletes. He served as the Team Atlantic U18 men’s program head coach for the 2018 Canada Cup and is the 2019 Team Atlantic U16 head coach. |
