MVB National Championship: Day 1 Recap

Match 1: Géants de Saint-Jean 3, SAIT Trojans 0

The first match of the CCAA men's volleyball championship turned into an unpredictable upset when the Cegep Saint-Jean Sur-Richelieu Geants swept the ACAC champion SAIT Trojans 25-23, 25-20 and 25-21.

The Geants' offence was too much for the Trojans to handle led by Isaiah Norfleet 12 kills.  Vincent Couturier was also impressive with nine kills while Mathieu Lassonde chipped in with six.  Simon Bilodeau was named the player of the match after quarterbacking the offence and added a kill and two aces. 

On the other hand the Trojans were handcuffed by 14 service errors.

Offensively the Alberta champs were led by player of the match Trent Mounter.  He had a match high 16 kills, seven digs and a pair of aces.  Spencer Coulter tallied 11 kills while Tyler Latu'il collected seven.

On Friday the Geants will play on the championship side of the bracket in the semi-final against the Fanshawe Falcons at 6:00pm.  The Trojans will play on the bronze medal side and face the PACWEST's VIU Mariners at 1:00pm.

Match 2: Fanshawe Falcons 3, VIU Mariners 2

The OCAA champion Fanshawe Falcons played in their first five-set match of the season and remain undefeated following a thrilling 15-10 victory over the VIU Mariners of the PACWEST.

The Falcons used a balanced attack led by the player of the match Cole Jordan who tallied 12 kills.  Sam Otten and his brother Will proved to be an effective 1-2 punch at the net each collecting 11 kills.

Setter Sebastian Lethbridge was outstanding getting to loose balls and quarterbacking the Falcons' offence keeping the Mariners defence off balance.

After winning the first set 26-24 the Mariners dropped the next two 25-16 and 25-19.  However they battled back in the fourth set winning 25-23 behind some timely hitting offensively.   Their attack was led by player of the match Denham O'Reilly who had a match high 19 kills and All-Canadian Braydon Brouwer's 10.

The Falcons move onto the semi-final and face the Cegep Saint-Jean Sur-Richelieu Geants on Friday at 6:00pm.  The Mariners will head to the bronze medal side and match up with the ACAC champion SAIT Trojans on Friday at 1:00pm.

Match 3: Titans de Limoilou 3, St. Thomas Tommies 0

The RSEQ champion Titans de Limoilou made quick work of the ACAA champions St. Thomas Tommies with a three-set sweep; 25-18, 25-21 and 25-16.

Nicolas Fortin was a key cog for the Titans with a match high 11 kills and was named the player of the match.  Etienne Betzile tallied eight kills to give his club some balance.    Their servicing game was also outstanding collecting eight aces, three from Ludovic Martin.

The Tommies, who have traveled the furthest, were shutdown offensively.  Both Adam Hamilton and the player of the match Garret Dickson each recorded five kills to lead their club.

The Titans will face the host Camosun Chargers at 8:00pm on Friday in a semi-final while the Tommies will battle the Keyano Huskies at 3:00pm in a bronze medal quarterfinal.

Match 4: Camosun Chargers 3, Keyano Huskies 0  

The Camosun Chargers punched their ticket to the national semi-final after a three-set victory over the ACAC's Keyano Huskies; 25-21, 25-23 and 25-14.

Jerome Cross was a one man wrecking crew and named player of the match with an impressive 20 kills and had a pair of blocks.  Eduardo Bida tallied eight kills while Matthew Bowers landed six.

From the service line the Chargers were outstanding collecting eight aces, including six from Bida.

The Huskies simply had no answer for Cross.  Their player of the match was Radoslaw Brzozowski who tried to stay with the offensive push by Cross and finished with seven kills.  Justin Delorme recorded six kills and Levi Brunner had three.

The Chargers will now move onto face Titans de Limoilou at 8:00pm on Friday with the winner moving onto the gold medal game.  The Huskies move to the bronze medal quarterfinal and will face the St. Thomas Tommies at 3:00pm.
