The Humber Hawks and Capilano Blues battled it out in the cold and wind to see who would be named the 2015 CCAA Men's Soccer Champions.
Despite a large and vocal contingent of fans supporting Humber, the Blues did not hesitate to establish their rhythm early in the game. At the 30th minute, the Hawks lost Dominic Roberts due to his second yellow card of the match. Only 8 minutes later, the Hawks lost a second player, Joshua Paredes-Procter as he was sent off with a red card for violent conduct. Playing 9 against 11, the Hawks fought hard to stay iin the game, keeping the scoreline blank for the first half.
With the start of the 2nd half, the Hawks had little choice but to close the game down defensively, as they Capilano Blues swarmed the Hawks in their offesnive zone. Capilano had a few close scoring chance but were unable to finsh off, while Humber had their own - missing a breakaway and a penaltiy shot. With boith team scoreless, the the game went into overtime, the first game of the Championship to requiring it.
The Hawks' defense continued to hold in the overtime, frustrating the talented Capilano offense. Overtime saw no scoring, pushing the game to penalty kicks. Both keepers, perfect in the match so far, would be the determining factors in the game. The first three shooters from each team did what they needed to do - each scoring and keeping their teams alive. Capilano's fourth shooter went right but Humber keeper but Eugenio Garro made a brilliant savem leaving the door open for his team to take it, which they did when Humber's last shoot founf the back of the net. Te Humber College Hawks are the 2015 CCAA Men's Soccer Championsh by a score of 1-0 (5-3) .
Both keepers were name Player of the Match: Hudson Nelles for Capilano University and Eugenio Garro for the Humber Hawks.
Algonquin Takes Bronze Over Host Cavaliers
Depsite a low seeding and a rough firsdt game, the host Champlain Cavaliers were looking for gloary as they took on the Algqnquin Thunder for the 2015 CCAA Men's Soccer Bronze medal. With full stands for th egame, the Cavaliers were being supported by former Cavaliers who were there to cheer on the team and provide support.
The Thunder quickly started strong and dicateted the flow of the play. Their possession of the bal forced the Cavaliers to react, and eventually a beautiful passing play resulted in a hard shot that found the back of the net, moving Algonquin up 1-0. Before the end of the half, the Thunder hat stretched their lead to 2-0 thanks to an Issac Johnson head redirection on a free kick played to perfection.
The Cavaliers played defensively in the second-half, but were unable to mount any serious scoring attempts, especially after injuries to two key players. The Thunder won the game by the score of 2-0 and captured the Bronze medal.
Players who stood out were Charles De Santis of the Champlain Cavaliers and Isaac Johnson from Algonquin College, and both were named Players of the Match.
Kwantlen 1, Keyano 0
The Kwantlen Eagles and Keyano Huskies, in their second meeting of this championship, battled it out for 5th place at the 2015 CCAA Men's Soccer Nationals in a game that began in near freezing conditions and a sharp wind. The players on both teams were playing their fourth game is as many days and the fatigue factor was most definitely in play.
An uneventful first half was played in the cold, with neither team scoring or having an real chances. The 2nd half was much of the same until the 73rd minute when Ryan Arthur from Kwantlen was awarded and penalty kick and scored. It turned out that that was all the scoring that was needed, and the Eagles took their 2nd win against Keyano at the Championship.
Players of the match were Ryan Arthur from Kwantlen and Abdulaziz Osman for Keyano College. Kwantlen Polytechnic University ended the tournament in 5th place and 6th place finish for Keyano College.
Holland 1, Ahuntsic 0
Under bluistery and cold conditions, the Holland Hurricanes downed the Ahuntsic Indiens 1-0, winning their last match of the championship and finsihing in 7th place.
With an early morning start both teams we faced with the brisk wind blowing across Seaway Park 1 in St-Lambert. While both teams had opportunities, neither were able to connect and open the scoring.
It was Holland's All-Canadian, Ibrahima Sanoh who finally broke the deadlock in the 68th minute, giving the Hurricanes all they need to come up with the win.
