Another beautiful fall day in Canada’s sunniest city saw golfers from Medicine Hat College, Red Deer College and Cégep André-Laurendeau create some space for themselves in team competition in round three of the 2018 CCAA Golf National Championships.
As a team, the Boomerang d’André-Laurendeau fired seven under par with a score of 281 and opened up a 10-stroke lead over the second place Humber College Hawks on the men’s side. Leading the Boomerang and the individual competition was Laurent Desmarchais who scored a tournament low round of 66.
“It was pretty easy. I hit solid all day,” says Desmarchais, who made seven birdies and only one bogie in the third round of play. “I hit a lot of 15 foot putts and I’m feeling great on this course. I just want to keep playing low and helping my team to win.”
Cégep Champlain St. Lawrence moved into third place with a one under par score of 287.
On the women’s side, Red Deer College delivered another strong performance on the links and increased their lead over the hometown Rattlers with an eight over par score of 152. The Queens now hold a 10-shot lead heading into the final round of the tournament tomorrow. The Boomerang d’André-Laurendeau sit 13 strokes behind the Rattlers in third place.
In the men’s individual competition, leader Desmarchais is followed by Conner Watt of the Humber Hawks and Michael Harrison of the Augustana Vikings in second and third place respectively.
Local Rattler Matthaus Taylor climbed into seventh place overall following a great round of five under par 67.
“I was solid today and settled through the round. I wasn’t in too much danger and it felt like pretty smooth sailing,” says Taylor.
Emily Romancew of John Abbott College continues to lead in the individual women’s race. Alyssa Stoddart from Fanshawe College shot a three under par 69 to vault into second place, while Shaye Leidenius of Red Deer College secured the third spot.
Once again, athletes demonstrated positive behavior and sportsmanship on and off the course. Rebecca Reitsma of the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat was selected as the female golfer of the day for her kindness shown to the starters and volunteers. She shot an 84, which was an 11-stroke improvement over her opening round.
Today’s male golfer of the day was Laurent Desmarchais of the Boomerang d’André-Laurendeau. With a tournament low round score of 66, Desmarchais leads the individual pack with a three-day total of nine under par. He is also recognized for being polite and respectful with the championship committee.
The team of the day was the Fanshawe Falcons. They have been very appreciative of volunteers and both men’s and women’s teams have improved their scores each day.
